Keep that 50$ guitar for 80 years, it will be a priceless antic and people will compare its unique sound to the cheapest guitar, in 2100.

Let's be honest. The cheap one doesn't sound bad at all in this video. But that's probably because a pro is playing it.

My new Guild D55 sounds as good I think. But at 4K it better. I absolutely love acoustic guitars and have many high end acoustics. It’s my passion and that’s why I buy them. My dream is to have a vintage J200.

My first guitar was even worse than that, if you can believe it. The body was painted over with a thick layer of oil paint, the neck was probably from a different guitar altogether, crudely bolted on. No wonder I quit for so many years.

Ya know, I have always had a soft spot for really cheap guitars. When I was far from home volunteering, we had a couple of absolutely bottom of the barrel guitars on base that must have just been found somewhere and donated or left behind. A few of us could play and we would trade off for hours on those things! The guitars were garbage (they may have been literal garbage pulled from a dumpster or the side of the road for all I know) but we didn’t care. It was a wonderful way to end every night!

For sound and ease of playing, I find Cort Guitars to be very good. Even tge cheapest in the range are very playable. Admitedly, the two I actually own I have lowered the action considerably by filing down the bridge/saddle and nut. To get volume whilst maintaining lighter tension I have size 11 strings but swapped out the high E and B string to the even lighter ones from a set of size 10 strings. So, cost wise in UK £ The guitars were £130 for a Cort Mini AD and £230 for a Cort SFX. I payed an extra £14 for an Artec passive soundhole pickup for the Mini AD. Im currently having the SFX upgraded with Real Bone Nut and Bridge which is £70 and then I will consider whether fret adjustment is worth it or not for £60 to bring it to the lowest possible action professional set up. So that will bring it to a total cost of £360. At that point I will be looking for a second hand Fishman EQ and pickup Rod to replace the factory budget one. Looking at new and second hand guitars, at the level I am at, £450 will get me a nice new one or an excellent second hand model. For a beginner, its well worth looking at second hand shops and pawn shops. For £50 you can get some really good first guitars but its important to know what youre looking at. Make sure theres no cracks or dents in the top board, no major cracks in the back and sides and make sure the neck isnt split or cracks between the fretboard and neck. Check the head stock is sturdy and On nylon strung guitars, check that the fret board all the way up is paralell with the body of the guitar.

The truth is, the super cheap guitars are not far behind the super expensive ones. They are very good quality. They come from China, and their quality is greatly improving day by day. They are a much better alternative to the western built instruments, which are reduculously expensive. These days people's wallets around the world are getting skinnier and skinnier, the choice is obvious. Good on You China, keep up good work.

I have a mid range acoustic (a bit > 1k) because when I was 18, I thought all players needed one to be taken seriously and after testing out a couple, it was just worth it to me. Worked a full summer for it. Even though I'm more intersted in rock than background music for restaurants, I still play the acoustic from time to time. Even live, e.g. at my grandmothers birthday not so long ago. It's a life time investment. A 300 bucks guitar would've saved me some money (to spend on stuff I wouldn't even remember anymore), but mine is such a joy to play. If it was some 50 bucks piece of c*, I wouldn't have touched it in a decade.

Btw, if you really want to torture your kid with an acoustic guitar, the gear is the least of your concerns. If you want them to stick with it, make sure they're actually having fun and stay motivated. For example, a lot of music schools offer band programs even for absolute beginners. That's a more important investment than the guitar itself. The way most people teach kids is just frightening, be super careful there. And if they like the instrument, they'll buy their own stuff later anyhow.

But also be real here, you wouldn't spend more than 50 bucks on a hobby that will take thousands of hours of your or your kid's time? That's the amount you probably spend on things you don't need each week. Save up for a month and you can afford a 200 bucks guitar even if you're dead broke (like I was with 18 - full circle, wasn't my first guitar though).

Right from the start I guessed that comfort and feel for the player was going to be the biggest part. If you close your eyes while watching this video they sound more similar than you might think. I don't think it's anywhere near as noticeable as the difference between, say, a cheap grand piano versus a legendary Steinway. But I knew this find it far less easy to make it sound good.

Ive played since my dad taught me as a kid. Ive played every guitar I can get permission to play, including some very expensive. Three years ago i went into a Guitar Center in Ventura CA, with my daughter to buy her a guitar. We played 20 or so guitars, but i found a Breedlove PS Pursuit Concerto, Cinnamon burst. Before i even played a note the hairs stood on my neck. It was wildly out of tune. Tuned like a dream. Then i played some bits -- i cried. The sweetness, the profound simple strength, the nameless spiritual intensity... I had a budget of $400, with a max of $500. We got her a gorgeous, wonderful, and happy Martin. I flew home to Minnesota, and for a month i ached for that Breedlove sweetheart. I wanted to walk back to California. At a month i wven called the store to ask if they still had it. They did. I hung up distraught. By that time i had already bought and paid for the daughter's guitar, so i would need another $750. I had the money by that time, but that much money for a guitar! That's a LOT! Another two weeks later i called the store again, intending to just go ahead and buy it and ask them to gentle tuck it away until my daugjter couldget there. It was gone. I have pther wonderful guitars, but none have played or been so beautiful to play as that single guitar. Huge sigh...i made a big mistake, and i knew it at the time. Maybe some day the little friend will circle back to me, but i seriously doubt it. Lesson: when that "one" reaches up and slaps you across the heart, don't hesitate! Take her home!

My first guitar was a ten dollar no name bought at our local five and ten cent store in rural western Pennsylvania. I was about ten years old. I found out from a Mel Bey book from the nineteen 30’s how to tune it (this was in about 1963). It was very poor quality. The action was so high I bled when learning to play. But I could tune it and play it. I taught myself to read music from old method books and sheet music from the 1930’s and ‘40s. I certainly developed massive callouses. But learn I did. I also had old records of Delta blues artists and I copied the songs teaching myself fingerstyle by trial and error. Five years or so later I played a friend’s father’s dreadnaught Gibson (an old one) and finally found out what it felt like to play a good guitar. But I did play that junk guitar for about seven years before I got a decent used guitar from a music store in Pittsburgh. Our music journeys are all different. I think my playing that junk guitar made me a better player in the end.

Unless you buy a guitar from the guy who made it, you're buying something that was made on an assembly line. You might get a great one and you might get a middle of the road version no matter the price range (relatively speaking). All of them were created to generate a profit for the company that built them. I'm not implying that making things for money is a bad thing. It's just that with companies and corporations, money comes first. Just look at what Gibson puts out. Their quality isn't consistent over the years and even batches.
