What kind of pick do you use? Which one would you try next?

For me I like how nylon plays off the strings, more slick in the strumming.

Guitar pick/s was said 35 times 😅 I didn't count the word pick on its own. Won't metal picks / pennies put more wear on your strings?

all my life I have used medium picks until I bought an acoustic 12 string. that guitar sounded dull and didn't have the 'jangle' I expected until I moved to a lightweight pick. But I need to do some more testing to find just the right one.

Personal experience: At the same gauge, regular picks (celluloid, nylon and acetal) sound extremelly similar (not noticeable at all to a non musically trained person) while metal/wood picks really change up the sound. When talking different gauges, the sound of your guitar (especially struming) can change A LOT.

The funny thing to think about is that all he’s actually doing is just changing the amplitude of certain harmonics by using different picks.

i will say the texture of a brand new tortex pick is amazing very very grippy but it looses it rather quick but still retains enough so its alot more grippy then a say fender celluloid pick

I use different picks for different styles/applications. A 0.50 Tortex for ska/reggae, a 0.60-0.73 for acoustic/bass, and for heavier stuff, I got some Dimebag Dime Gear picks, don't know the gauge, but they are a bit thicker than I'm used to, totally diggin them, though.

I assumed the V cut into the back side of the kirk hammet pick was to tell you that you're holding it in the right place. Not a terrible idea for a player riffing out on stage most of the time

Thanks for this video. I was using nylon .60mm picks for the longest time because I heard the acts what EVH was using; this is true but in his latter days! I read that he used Fender medium celluloid picks on his first few albums. I had those exact Fender picks that I was using for my Floyd Rose to keep flush (I glued them to my guitar at one point but now I learned more about FR bridges and don’t need them). I thought they were trash and omg, THAT’S what got me that brown sound finally. I had everything else but couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t get that poppy plucking like sound Eddie had on songs like Little Dreamer until I used the Fender medium celluloid pick. It’s like I’m learning to play all over again lol. I’m really good with a nylon pick but they are dead for plying Van Halen music. I’m the One is easy with a nylon pick but a medium celluloid pick is taking me awhile to get the hang of it. Picks make a difference in tone WAY more than body wood (if it even makes a perceivable difference at all).

I would say its all up to the player. I, myself, notice a difference in tone between all the different picks, and gauges. But listening to another guitarist play, I cant tell at all. I guess I'll need to do my own video and demonstrate how I hear the difference, and describe the feeling between them all. Stay tuned!

A penny or a cent is a great choice for a pick if you are looking for versatility or if picks aren't available in your area!

Definitely. I usually use a flatter tip pick and today I just randomly grabbed a pick out of my stash and started playing and I was like why is my guitar so bright and the only difference was my pick I was using was a very pointy pick

Brian may ain’t got nothing on me Australia doesn’t have pennies and I didn’t have anything smaller than an Australian 50 cent. over an inch in diameter (about 3cm), not circular but 12 sided, and around 3mm thick and, it sounds unique, and you can get different sounds from the ridges depending on how and where you play

Mostly I prefer the sound and dexterity of fingers.
I use a natural water buffalo horn pick if I'm going to use one. Stiff, natural and snappy.

It is quite interesting to see how much the sound actually changes! I just made several picks (thanks for being part of the inspiration) out of different woods, from hard to soft woods. And it is really interesting to hear the tone shift.

I’ve been making my own pics out of assorted hardwoods for the last two years and prefer them for jazz and lead work - they don’t have the ‘click’ you get from plastic. I’ve also settled on 3 shapes - a medium jazz style for general playing, a mini jazz for soloing… and a sharkfin design for everything else - with all the trimmings - so I have 3 different shaped points and 2 long sides for some more complex sounds. And then I have some very light gauge Dunlop’s for general strumming. It’s wonderful to have the choices. PS - my preferred woods are cedar and rimu - they take nice finishes - and I’ve even tried palm tree - which looks amazing, although it’s not going to last as long as the hardwoods!

If you don’t like your tone - try changing your pick. It’s a dramatic move and cheap too. I have expensive pedals that can be made to sound like shit with the wrong pick. Picks are not all about playing facility and how they make you feel. They do stuff. They seriously do stuff.
