In the late medieval era, Indian empires went through both a military and sociopolitical transformation thanks to the introduction of gunpowder technology (firearms and cannons). Gunpowder weapons led to centralization and innovation. It also created "big" winners and losers -- those who were willing to adapt, and those who were not.

In this video, we'll also be examining the introduction of gunpowder technology to India through the lens of the Vijayanagar Empire (and partly the Mughal Empire). Enjoy!

The lesson learned from the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire needs to be absorbed by the US when it comes to AI. The continuous fielding of thoroughly tested and integrated innovations is key to victory.

heavy cannons stuffed with metal coins... that shait even sounds terrifying.
edit: I just checked... The vijay nagara kingdom started in 1336 and ended in 1564... so yeah they were doing something right. Most of the empires that fought it perished before them.

Eh Sala Kuteh... This video should be named "History of South India's Cannons"... As there is No mention of the North and the Sikhs and Maharaja Ranjit Singhs "Zamzama" (meaning "thunder" or "roar",) Canon. The Sikhs are a religious group that originated in the Punjab region of India in the 15th century. Maharaja Ranjit Singh, born in 1780, was the founder and ruler of the Sikh kingdom of the Punjab in the early 19th century. He was known as the Lion of the Punjab [1].

The Zamzama Gun, also known as Kims Gun or Bhangianwali Toap, is a large-bore cannon that was cast in Lahore, present-day Pakistan, during the Durrani Empire around 1757. The cannon is currently on display in front of the Lahore Museum in Lahore [2].

Maharaja Ranjit Singh's army used the Zamzama cannon in many battles, and it became a symbol of the power and military might of the Sikh Empire. The cannon was originally built by the Mughal Empire and was captured by the Sikhs during a battle in the 18th century. The Zamzama cannon is still on display at the Lahore Fort in Pakistan and is considered to be one of the most significant historical artifacts of the Sikh Empire. It is a reminder of the power and influence that Maharaja Ranjit Singh had during his reign, and it is a testament to the military prowess of the Sikh army [1].

Regarding gunpowder technology in medieval India, there were significant developments during this time period. The use of gunpowder and firearms in India can be traced back to the 14th century, and there were many advancements in the technology during the following centuries. One of the earliest known firearms in India was the hand cannon, which was used in battles during the 14th and 15th centuries. The Mughal Empire was particularly known for its use of gunpowder technology, and they were instrumental in developing some of the most advanced firearms of the time [2]. During the First Anglo-Sikh War in 1845, the British faced the Sikhs, who were using the Zamzama Gun among other artillery. The battle of Ferozeshah, which was fought on December 21 and 22, 1845, was one such instance where the Zamzama Gun was used by the Sikhs. The British faced heavy losses,

In conclusion, the Sikhs and Maharaja Ranjit Singh's use of the Zamzama cannon is a testament to the military prowess and power of the Sikh Empire. The use of gunpowder technology in medieval India was a significant development, with advancements in firearms technology being made throughout the period.

There were many reasons for talikota failure for vijaynagar .(my opinion ) 1.krishnadevaraya was canal builder andtemplebuilder in later yrs .2 .ramaraya was a peacetime politician always undermining Brahmins and literate persons and surviving on loyalty to himself and not the kingdom .3.senior army commanders were old men who would panic in battle field .4 .muslims were recruited whoseloyalty was always to islam and not to the kingdom ,which was proved later in battleground.5 . Ramaraya was talker not fighter and overaged .6 .he believed in infantry cavalry archers etc and his guns were dysfunctional .6 .the Muslim army commanders were young and motivated for jihad 7 . Turkish gunner filled the guns with pebbles and fired to find hundreds of the vijaynagar soldiers fall dead .initial victory of vijaynagar became a catastrophic defeat .what followed was loot instead of salary ,rape of women mal e ganimat ,and temple destruction .the Islamic practice !

I would blame Mughals anyday. When they were at the height of power, they knew the importance of firearms but didn't have the foresight to research and manufacture them on an industrial scale. That cost us dearly in the later times.

I always felt, in reference to cannon and artillery, that the west went practical. they tried to get the best materials(generally, though the british were slow to adopt somethings the continental europeans were not) they tried to use the best science to make the most efficient materials and chemicals.
the east sort went novelty size on evertyhing.
giant cannons, like huge impractical giant cannon were a common feature. later the british capture some from the sikhs in the 1840s that had been around already 100-150 years old that were massive. house sized
the camel gun wasnt exactly a battle winner. the europeans facing them never really worried much. they are cool, they look neat but evidence shows they werent exactly effective.
same with rockets. the british used them for a short period of time, essentially a giant bottle rocket(well its right there in the name) they werent exactly easy to aim, they often were dudes but they could break up undisciplined troops and freak people out with all the noise and fire.
War wagons also, europe had those too, with cannon. Not really effective without armor.

Pls note - gunpowder helped the afghan, arab and turki armies invade India in 1100. They had been knocking at India's NW frontier for 4 centuries before this with limited success. With gunpowder, they managed to burst through and invade lndia. The technology was almost exclusively used by muslim armies till Hindus learned how to use it and later defend themselves.
