Japanese people in general have the problem of hive-minded "thinking" which is really just blind obedience. It's incredibly lazy to only conceptualize two nationalities. It makes Japanese appear to be very uneducated, internationally. Shame.

If multiple nationalities are allowed, there is a fear that other countries could easily intervene politically.

Better to apply for your Japanese passport while you are in Japan, as my daughter does. They don't ask about her other passport, and she doesn't tell. In any case, if she is here, she will say that she is Japanese. The Japanese government cannot take the passport of another country away from you, I believe. The passport doesn't belong to the person anyway, but the government which issued it..

Japanese bureaucrats will eventually have to address their own bigotry and racism if they wish to consider their culture "modern" and "civilized", instead of "backward", but they are not alone by any means. China is even worse, and simply does not allow any foreign born person, even by marriage, to become a citizen, and Germany has a similar system to Japan of forcing people to choose a single nationality.

Double nationality is forbidden because if a war starts, you have to choose which side you're with.
Imagine having a Japanese and Korean double nationality, you can't just runaway from conscription.

Moral of the Story: if the government asks you anything, always lie.
And no, its not meant to sound sarcastic.
Most of the time if the government gets involved into private affairs its always a bad thing so if you can get away with lying, do it.

I hold dual citizenship now, and I wonder what it’s going to be like if I ever want to marry a Japanese person while I’m here in Japan. This adds to the already difficult problem to mingle with Japanese people.

Is it not a bad idea to negotiate (For example) a Japanese/Australian/south Korean single market trade union to help stabilize the economy? I am referring to something similar to what the European union has which has an economically stable trade organization that helps to negotiate trade, agriculture, fishery and regional development as well as security for each other.

You can lose your other Nationality (so part of your identity) and name in some cases because Japan doesn’t accept middle name…In case you were born in another country and your parents named you with 2 names.( sorry my English is not so good)

I would fully support if Japan changed to dual citizenship. Would gives my kids, two who are half Japanese and one who is native Japanese, a better chance to embrace their Japanese heritage. I myself want to get my British and Irish citizenship and know I can without any problems.

Basically, dual nationals must decide by the age of 21 whether to choose Japanese nationality or nationality of another country.
In the future, I think it will be difficult for people who have managed to maintain their dual nationality by circumventing legal holes to maintain their Japanese nationality.

I found the statement of the foreign woman about Japanese nearly always assuming the non-Japanese looking people to be unable to speak Japanese and therefore not even attempting to talk to them in Japanese mind blowing. In Germany most people speak very good English and also some French and other languages, too. But we still talk to obvious foreigners in German first, because we ourselves can often speak multiple languages.
So to Germans there is no reason to assume the foreigner/tourist can't speak German.
And here is probably where the problem lies at. Most Japanese can only speak their native language. It's mostly the younger generations that also speak or are interested in foreign languages. So only can imagine a foreigner speaking Japanese, since they as Japanese, also speak foreign languages.

It's very interesting that here in Germany we are so used to having people of various different cultures living as a legal German, that we actually got used to put more emphasis on the behavior and culture of a person than their visual attributes. For example, if a seeming foreigner speaks perfect German and acts in German traditions, you'll often find that Germans accept and regard them higher or like them more than genetically pure Germans.
And it makes sense, as that person willingly shows you, that he respects German culture and obviously likes it so much, that he adopted it. Meaning the person makes a statement "I want to get along with you" - and obviously, who wouldn't like that?

I think if Japan allows citizens of Japan who naturalize in other countries to hold dual nationality but still requires people naturalizing in Japan to give up other nationality, then it looks unfair. If Japan allows dual nationality for emigration, then it would need to allow dual nationality for immigration as well to be fair.

I was born in Japan from a Japanese mother and French father and at the age of ~5, I went to France and lived there for almost 20 years. Nobody ever asked me anything even though i knew about this "law"/ "rule". Even when going to the Japanese embassy to renew my Japanese passport after my 20s, the Japanese officials of the Japanese embassy in France didn't ask me anything particular because they know in France every double−nationality person keep both their French/Japanese citizenship. You cannot lose your French nationality unless you're a convicted terrorist or something.
Even though i had to choose, I will choose Japanese since I know how it is hard to get. In France, they don't even bother trying to do something over illegal criminal immigrants. So I know I will never risk anything in France without French passport.

Interesting how similar Germany and Japan are on these topics.
We also have to give up our nationality when taking on another while (some) foreigners are nowadays allowed to keep theirs.
Everyone speaking English as default to foreigners.
And everyone non native being labelled as "Ausländer" (gaijin, "Person from outside the land", regardless of how long they or their family have been living here)

Dual citizenship only makes sense if both countries are allies, but you can't guarantee that they will be forever. Can you imagine someone who is a dual citizen of Russia and Ukraine? Who's do they actually hold allegiance to?

Citizenship is an archaic concept. People should have rights and privileges depending on the place where they live and pay taxes. The place of birth and your parents should be irrelevant.

I respect Japan's rejection to Globalization. It is incorrect to force every country to become America or Europe. Japan has every right to remain who it is. However, I do hope there is a better solution to the dual citizenship issue.

I lived in Japan from the USA for 5 years on a long term visa, while working for a law firm. I left at the 5 year mark due to double taxation kicking in at that point - both countries at that point inflict world-wide income taxation. This is a big problem for US citizen professionals working in Japan. Imagine having to pay taxes in Japan even for money in a Roth IRA or 401k. Japan and/or the USA need to rethink their taxation policies. I talked to many ex-USA citizens who dropped US citizenship in Japan simply because of the taxation problem.

The United States doesn’t recognize dual nationality, if you have US citizenship you have no other as far as the USA is concerned but they don’t restrict your personal freedom if another nation does allows it.
