Does Media Tomb all the company/creators to have write access into my files? That's one reason I hate Plex, among a host of over reasons.

I tried to install this on my Linux Mint machine and got the not available message. I know this is a few years old. Is Mediatomb still a good solution for a dlna server??

Wouldn't it be better to set up a more globally accessible folder? Don't weird things happen when you add permissions to "other" on your home directory?
