is VXAO exclusive for DX11 only? And why the game dev. don't include VXAO on next sequel (SOTTR)?

ngl but I think the visual quality in a lot of these clips is a little too low to show good comparisons between the different types of Ambient Occlusion.
Some of the scenes are also not the best examples, it is really hard to tell the difference unless you zoom in on specific examples and with higher quality, but I mean this video did come out over 5 years ago so what can ya do.

HBAO+ is the most optimized and best looking
SSAO is kinda washed out,VXAO kills framerate,off is ugly of course
So HBAO+ must be turned on for the best balance between performance and quality

am i the only one who cant tell the difference? i always have ambient occlusion off in all my games

Only one of the few games that does hbao well. Ssao just isn’t enough, especially in doors and in tombs, Vxao on the other hand does it better than hbao most of the time, is a bit too aggressive, over shadowing and tanks performance quite a bit.

In some scenes vxao is way better than everything, by the way vxao is not screen space (it uses voxel cone tracing). I love VXGI, VXAO (VXGI not used in any game yet)

I have better than average vision and I'm honestly struggling to see the difference between the 3 modes, even sitting less than 2ft away from my screen. As long as it isn't set to "Off" then it looks great. Maybe I could if I had one of those $2000 gaming monitors with all the bleeding-edge tech in it, but I don't have anywhere near enough disposable income to afford that.

VXAO: "I'LL TAKE YOUR ENTIRE STOCK"

The SSAO just makes it look like everything has a shadow glowing from it, it's very distracting. Either go all the way or disable AO, the compromise of using SSAO is pretty shitty imo.

My settings are off, on, HBAO+. Is "on" just VXAO or SSAO? Where's the 3rd option even? Watching this video makes me think that my TN panel just doesn't have the juice to show the differences, it looks like shadows are different, hard to even say if it's simply better or not, just different. Seeing the last scene, I can tell there's more contrast.

youre better off with SSAO. HBAO+ and VXAO hurts the performance way too much

The black bloom that appears around character models in SSAO looks awful.


However, devs managed to make SSAO look good in this game. If you're struggling to manage locked 60 FPS [assuming you are targetting 60 FPS], then drop HBAO and go for SSAO. But if you have 7-10 FPS headroom, then just use HBAO+ since it looks better.

VXAO is most realistic but huge fps decline instead.

SSAO is the sweet spot and much more realistic

I would go with HBAO+ as NVidia graphics cards might handle that best.

Old video, the newer ASSAO also comes into picture now, similar results to HBAO+ but lower performance cost. Similar but not exact of course. VXAO still top dog. TR, especially these scenes, really does a poor job of comparing these modes though besides their impact on FPS. I feel the particular chosen scenes didn't do justice. Find something with stairs and more wall edges.

HBAO+ is the best in my opinion. VXAO eats all off the fps.
