Funnily enough youve missed out the fact that you can actually keep the Rueful Axe, aswell as the Mask(Clavicus vile).
Aslong as you have the slowtime shout, & use it upon making your choice of sparing barbas, its the simple matter of equiping the axe and getting to a weapon rack before the quest removes it.
