This was good, but Jon could have done more homework. I also wish he'd asked why we need the biggest military in the history of the world, spending about 10 times more than the next 10 countries combined, with about 750 military bases in about 80 different countries, the full-blown military-industrial complex President Eisenhower warned us of. Why do we need all this? What are we so afraid of? Meanwhile we face issues such as global warming, extreme income inequality, with many people not getting a living wage, decent benefits and retirement, aging infrastructure, low ranked medical and educational systems. It looks like a racket to enrich military contractors, who give plenty of money to politicians to keep the deal going. As he said, waste, fraud and abuse. This can't go on forever. If we as a country don't grow up and take responsibility for the people, the planet, and the future we will somehow be humbled by history. Empires rise and fall, and the American empire is in decline. A good audit is a good start, but we need a lot more. If Bernie Sanders ran for president again I'd vote for him. He has more sense than a lot of them.

Veteran here. The US government spends billions on veteran's care every year which translates to me calling over and over again to find out what happened to my referral or where is my prescription? I wait up to two months for an appointment only to be told three days before that my doctor decided to take a vacation and I need to reschedule. All bureaucracies are inherently so bloated that they fibrillate rather than function. So many people are paid to make sure somebody else is doing their job that eventually no one is doing "their" job. The DoD is too big, the US government is too big to function properly.

The American military is crucially important for the global order which is made the whole world richer and save her without it China or the Soviets would have consumed this earth and that's a thousand times worse. Anyone who participated in audits knows that audits tell you the basic information you need to conduct an investigation on waste, corruption etc. It is basically agreeing that your recordkeeping your financial information is per guidelines and so is accurate.

I understand she's a defense deputy, but I feel like she was coming across too defensive...

Former navy aviation guy here. I can attest to the amount of waste. And also overspending. As a brand new sailor at my first duty station, I was tasked with troubleshooting a $700k machine. And in the process, I was told to order whatever parts were necessary to get it running. Being completely green, I accidently ended up ordering over $250k worth of parts for this machine. We had supervisors that were "collateral duty inspectors" that were certified to sign off work orders/parts orders. A lot of the times, our superiors pressured the CDIs to push maintenance through while knowing they would fudge some of the steps. During our annual parts cataloging, we come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of unaccounted parts. Just sitting around collecting dust. This was an extremely common occurrence in my division. I worked with support equipment so it obviously only gets more expensive from there.

Our base would go through hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel every day... for training missions. Dozens of squadrons of F/A-18s, assorted helos, DC-10s, weekly C-5s. All just to fly around above the coast for hours every day. I feel like this is only scratching the surface.

And the food... dear god the food. I worked mids. 5PM-8/9AM. And we got all of the left overs from the main dinner. There were nights I was lucky if I got a dried, crumbled up hamburger patty with a pickle and some moldy pudding on the side. And rotten fruit. Not an exaggeration. Not even fking pirates treat their crew this poorly.

Her laughing and condesention, is by far the most frustrating part.

God bless you, Stewart. No matter who your God is, I hope he blesses you ;-). I didn't even get a fr** food stamp, for God's sake, when my kid needed it! There are a lot of deep pockets up there among the upper ranks! And despite my respect for you, I think you are wasting your time! Enlisted folks like me are just slaves. Some of the good ones (you know what the requirements are) may become the supervisors of other slaves, but others are just going to be slaves!

I really hate politicians…… according to her if the military decided to buy 1 trillion dollars worth of candy and it was delivered, everything is Ok…..don’t worry about the reasons why we bought it TRUST US …..
