This fight was ridiculous, I probably tried seven before getting lucky.

The blackguard! Such a ridiculously broken enemy - completely impossible for most builds on Very Difficult or even Core difficulty. I can tell you it is definitely not easier with a fighter. When I start a character in this game it is with the sole aim of being able to handle this fight.

The Desert's Fury does indeed change based on your class. Wizards and Sorcerers get the staff you did, Druids get a scimitar, and all other classes get a flail. At least according to the information I was able to find, which was surprisingly little.
