The QCTP upgrades my mini lathe; it's going to save me a lot of time between tool changing. This is a 'Multifix type' quick change tool post, with 40 different tool-bit positions. In this video we bore the tool post's mounting hole to fit in to the base of the top slide as also we turn a new smaller stud for it, mounting and alignment at the end.

What is this? A toolpost holder for ants!?!? It has to be at least... 3 times this size!

For that little short toolpost that's threaded all the way down in you could use any kind of metal any kind of steel I should say I can't see there being any kind of flexing in that short amount. I would just use 4140 I've never even heard of Swedish steel

AA looks like a bit too smaller for this lathe. Right size would have been AS, or Ab as they call it in China. Probably Optimum doesn't sell it.

Nice job installing the toolpost, I have the same lathe and was thinking of doing the same upgrade. I had planned to use the size up (A) but note the smaller one you use (Aa) is a lot cheaper. Are you happy with the smaller one or would you now advise the size up.

The only problem with this sort of lathe tool post design is that having to go back to working with any other system is really frustrating.

You obviously took a lot of pleasure making your tool post installation exactly to your liking. Another fellow might locktite in a factory stud as good enough but in a home shop you set your own standards. However 1045 is excellent fastener material as it's low in cost, is readily machined up to Rc 35, is ductile enough in the annealed state for cold forging, and may be heat-treated to any of the standard fastener grades save those intended for elevated temperature service.

Polar alignment of the holder to the compound's sliding axis might seem convenient until tool orientation to part feature is concerned - ie: threading tool flank symmetry to pitch cylinder. 40 postions has no convenient increment at 30 degres compound angle.

Another point is choice of reference surfaces: the as heat-treated face of the holder is never employed as an abutment. The tool shank contacts the lower ledge and back wall of the holder and thus must be considered as reference and location surfaces. The dip in the face you pointed out is likely an artifact of heat treatment distortion.

I love the accuracy, repeatability, and convenience of the Mulitfix pattern QCTP system. I've used most versions ever manufactured over my career and never once found loose-ness or inaccuracy except in rare instances of 40 years of hard wear and abuse. My personal tooling is based on a "B" set marketed by Enco in the early I '70's and added to via auction finds and Asian import holders. All interchange and repeat to small tenths.

Whether Mulitfix, Aloris, or some other QCTP system is superior seems to be more a matter of partisan opinion than objective merit. I've used most but I've come to favor the Multifix because of Its 40 position feature. If I want to quickly change the tool lead angle for better chip control I can increment the holder angle without disturbing the orientation or dial settings of my other tool holders. Outside of that one feature, all well made QCTP systems have about the same accuracy, rigidity, repeatability, and durability. But it is that one feature - indexibility - that inspired me to commit to the Multifix system for my home shop.

My only downcheck for the Multifix system is the difficulty in making DIY tool holders. The spline is a real challenge for a small shop unless you have some form of reciprocating tool shaping capability and part indexing. My solution was an "E" shaping head on a Bridgport mill and a rotary table. It worked well if I was careful but in general it was a PITA to DIY Multifix tool holders.

The measurement you did actually measured your tool holder alignment to the top slide movement. You are assuming that your top slide is travelling parallel to the ways of the machine. Better would be to mount the indicator base on the machine bed ways and move the whole carriage to measure the tool holder..

Cool tool holder and great job mounting! Why not use the carriage rater than the compound, so to be sure to be dead on z axis? I'm sure it's fine just curious. Thanks for sharing.

The run-out across the face of the tool holder doesn't really matter, I think if you are going to index the tool holder then it needs to be done at the back face where the tool bit butts against. or the tool it's self

I just rigged the same thing up on my D180x300, but I didn't find it necessary to make a whole new post. I just bored out the main gear looking thingy to fit the top slide, and drilled out the top stud that came with the quick change tool post (it looks like yours already fit though). Being all clamped down by the nut on top means it's never going to move.

At around the 7 minute mark you turn the bolt to fit the hole very precisely, then later you bore that hole larger. Very puzzling.

Hi Jimmy,
I'm wondering if you could get the "factory fit" part from Optimum in the first place so that you don't have to machine the part to make it fit?
I'm asking that because I have d210-400 form optimum and its qctp is quite expensive. If your scenario is usual in industry and it is always expected for us to modify parts to fit even if supplied by OEM then I might as well look into non Optimum sources of qctps.
Thanks,
Bruno

Great video! I have a 65x65mm base for my toolpost, what size multifix would you recommend? The Aa or A? :) I'm in a dilemma, the entire length of the lathe is about 1000mm, so its a small one, but i am worried that the Aa is a bit too small in fact :/

it looks like you need to tighten the Gibs in your compound the way your indicator is wobbling when indicating square on the new toolpost.

What does the side of the holder have to do with it? Shouldn't You measure against the cutting edge of the tool? To look for parallellism and/or any taper?
I would put the indicator in a tool holder and check it against a test bar...
Anyway - good explanations in a nice video! Thanks, Erling in Oslo.
