FYI, there is constant complaint from soldiers about a lack of 30 round magazine for the rifle and the same for SAW with ammo equal to old SAW. So many expect them to eventually be fielded. While at the same time some suspect that since the rifle can be rechambered for 5.56mm with just a barrel swap along with the new SAW to 7.62mm or even 5.56mm. That the kick even with the weaker non-AP rounds (6.8mm with a much weaker powder charge), the 6.8mm Fury is meant as an Armor piecing round as is without special materials like true AP rounds, that it will still be too difficult to control for the average solider. That the US Army is gonna go back to 5.56mm but keep its new rifle. While it figures out how to make the 6.8mm Fury more viable. Many think the 6.8mm will eventually be abandoned for a either new 5.56mm AP round. Or a smaller round like 6mm ARC that has been improved to match the performance of 6.8mm Fury. So the new round has been a back door way for the US Army to get a new rifle, but its new rifle is designed from the ground up to take more powerful rounds if necessary and can up caliber with just a barrel swap in many cases. So its essentially future proof as far as the US Army is concerned.

The US has already cancelled the Sig XM5 Rifle. It will never be the US main rifle. The Stoner design beat it out like every challenger since it’s conception.

Not adopting the XM5 was the right decision. It was was basically like going back in time to the days of the M-14 with a heavy rifle with only 20rd capacity (While any enemy would be armed with 30rd rifles). Like the M-14, and using Full power, Military Spec 6.5x51 Ammunition (Not the commercial 6.8x51, there is a Big difference in performance and recoil between the two) it, like the M-14 was also Uncontrollable on full Automatic Fire and dried up those 20rds fast. It would also be an extremely heavy load out. Basically one soldier can carry 500rds of the 6.8 vs 1,500 of the 5.56rd.

The Sig XM250 however, has promise. The XM5 might find its way into a DMR rifle (Replacing the M-14/M-21) but that’s as far as I see it going. The US is looking at the Robinson XCR for that role again. (The XCR is an outstanding rifle).

The US could improve the M4 could quickly and cheaply with one part, easily installed by any U.S. Soldier in under one minute. A new upper receiver: Ditch the low velocity 14” barrel and problematic Carbine length gas system and replace it with a new Mid-length Gas System upper receiver with 16.5” barrel (Possibly Free Floated barrel, but not a vital change like the Mid-length gas system and 16.5” Barrel would be).

The USMC are already not liking the M4. They are working on putting adjustable stocks on their M16A4’s and there is a rumored M16A5 with a free float barrel, Magpul UBR stock, Magpul Pistol Grip, and Chrome Bolt Carrier Group.

Even with the problems the M4 has it has gone head to head in serious Military Trials against some outstanding weapons like the FN SCAR, HK M416, Sig XM5 and every time the worst, most unreliable version of Stoners M16 design performed well enough that replacement would make no sense.

And remember kids; The M16 is a rifle.

The M4 is a Carbine.
