Hi, professional video editor here... Why are you using HDV? You should set your framesize to HD 1080i and pixel aspect ratio to square. And move to FCP X, would be much faster for the kind of work you do.

Why 1440? I always convert my footage first to prores 422 with mpeg streamclip and that then makes for nice smooth editing
