I put money last on my list and I'm now in dept do to my silly actions and I can't even afford to purchase a house. Money rules the world. But one must bring value and the best service he or she can provide. Plus it depends on what kind of service because not all work pays well regardless how great of an asset you are to the company.

I respectfully disagree with this advice, there are several good examples of people for whom this has worked on, but there are several millions more for whom the money never came

I'm about 6 months into a new job at a small company and my contract said I'd have a review of salary and performance at 3 months. Never happened, so I went to boss to start convo on performance and potentially broach salary by asking him "how am I doing here?" and he immediately deflected by answering "alright" sarcastically. Yea we both laughed but I could tell he did not want to have that convo so I didn't push. Other employees informed me they stopped doing reviews altogether, which I think is so they can avoid topic of salary and raises...this interaction has confirmed that.

Good advice. When I worked at Pearson back in the day as site supervisor in security , I found out , after being there awhile that some of the guards had not gotten an increase in 10 years . I wrote and email to the powers that be and they put in a substantial increase for them . I didn't ask for myself but they also put in an increase for me .

Sure, but companies aren’t out here handing out bigger salaries. It’s a different ballgame now, NOW they need us! They will need to show me how they can improve my life.

I thought like this guy - bringing value for the whole company and everyone. Working hard and helping collegues. Bottom line there were lots of ppl who hated me cos i worked too much and they saw me as an impediment for their careers, so i was constantly dragged into political wars and conflicts. Imagine that, trying to create common wealth for the whole company basically destroyed my career. Now ppl who were working to the minimum got promoted and progressed and my department got shut down and i was dismissed. Unfortunately this is how it works in corporate world. It's never been about who works most and who brings more value, it is all about positioning and bonding with the right people. The upper management level will promote you if it FITS their goals, not if you WORK hard.

One that follows this line of thinking that worked for me was to directly ask my boss what I needed to do to earn in the pay bracket I was after. He was a bit vague so I pressed for specifics - and then over the next year did all the things he said (and a bit more).
Next salary review I was bumped to the new pay level.
