Atomos Ninja V new AtomOS 10 features, setup and HDR run through with CEO Jeromy Young

Im comfused with this display recorder.
so if I record to the ssd thats on the display, I dont need the cameras memory card? or you need to have both?
if you have the SSD and memory card does it record to both? can someone explaing/break down how the recorder works

Very good explanation , thanks my understanding of what and how HDR and the NinjaV is , is much improved.
No one yet has just said that it doesn't actually change anything from your camera merely records and allows you to view what the finished media could look like using the extra fuctions to help you achieve that goal. Having post production friendly codecs / formats to record to.
There is one thing that is probably not related to the NinjaV so much but if you are able to find the time to answer would be appreciated.
If I input from my Z50 an 8 bit signal and record it in pro res hq 10 bit , is the signal merely mapped up. ie: an 8 bit value of say 25 gets mapped to a 10 bit value of 100 ?
Very new to better cameras and gear , really like this NinjaV.

Young's characterization of HLG as a "halfway house" is highly misleading industry propaganda. What he's basing this on is HLG's mapping of 1200 nits to 100 IRE versus PQ's 2000 nits (PQ is the HDR standard used by HDR10 and DolbyVision). Later he goes on to speculate about futuristic displays delivering even higher maximum luminance. In the real world, few 4K HDTV's can output even 1000 nits, most manage around 600-800 nits (about 2-3000 lumens). This mismatch between PQ's inflated luminance scale and practical HDTV performance is why HDR10+ and DolbyVision require metadata channels to retroactively tone map PQ nits to actual display nits. By contrast, HLG needs no extra metadata because its relative luminance levels are automatically scaled to each HDTV's maximum luminance level.

Excellent video! Keep up the great work. I love my Ninja V! I've not dared get into HDR yet and this has helped me get more confident with the concepts and will help me give it a try!

Atomos is the most complicated system in the world even after watching this video and hundreds of others I still have trouble understanding there is nothing intuitive it's a shame for such an expensive product take example on your feelworld competitors for example

The 709 button is useless. Using it would mean underexposing to make it look good on screen... like what you're doing here, exposing peak brightness at under 50IRE. Why not make the button work so you can expose for 709 correctly using Log? You could have an exposure offset option.

This is all very good and understandable BUT you are in direct contradiction with the legalize option you've implemented recently.
NOW we are being told that we HAVE TO turn OFF the LOG/HDR option, when recording in LOG, to be able to legalize. Which we HAVE TO do because FCPX (and you are talking about FCPX as well ...) will interpret the footage the wrong way otherwise ... Which makes me wonder why you do not mention this in this video, which has been recorded prior to the new update.
So now, we have a convoluted and very abusive switching between full and legal range going on at the cost of image quality (and at the cost of your customers mental well being). 
In addition to that, we are stuck within 100 IRE because we lose the ability to monitor in HLG or PQ, when we turn off LOG/HDR (because WE HAVE to legalize). However, monitoring in HLG or PQ is what you recommend in this video ...
So all this video is telling us, turns out to be utterly wrong after the new update.
And you say, you didn't want to make it too complicated ...
Guys, you really should simplify the workflow with the Ninja V. And please update the manual (still the first edition from 2018 ...) And please do a video explaining the mess you've created by introducing this "legalize" option.

Too bad companies leave behind older units like the Flame that I paid about 3 times the price of the Ninja for the for 1st one and 2x for the second unit I have. Atomos' focus is selling units not saving me equipment $$.

Just last week, I wrote Atomos because one of my unit's cover is cracking at the connection points top and bottom. First they said they had replacement covers and it's not to difficult to replace. Then, they said they couldn't give up a cover because they needed to retain them for warranty work. So basically they are saying that new customers are worth more than long term customers.

My solution is to buy a Smallrig cage for the Flame for $150. That's expensive, but hopefully keeps my Flame from falling apart.

I was going to buy a Ninja, but not now.

Hey, thanks fo for the video. If starting with hdr would you recommend using atomos ninja inferno or ninja v? Ninja inferno has higher nits, does it mean the HDR will be different?

How I can Record from my Sony A7iii and I can see the result in Atomos ninja V.
Because as soon as I hit record, the Ninja goes black and only the internal card on the A7iii records the footage.?!
How I can make ninja like a normal display ?!

Amazing apple mac system with final cut? Not at all biased is he? Also I'd say 70% of people do not own an HDR tv or monitor so that halfway house is where most of your content is going to live. Just FYI.

When I purchased a Ninja V it was on the basis, stated in your Ninja V product brochure, p.38 and by Atomos reps at trade shows that TIME-LAPSE would soon be possible.
Numerous firmware updates later it still isn’t.
Time and time again I’ve contacted support and the usual response is
"This feature will definitely be added to the Ninja V soon and we haven't forgotten about our customers who have been patiently waiting for this! Our main priority right now is bringing Multicam recording to the Sumo 19 and Shogun 7 through massive firmware updates which are both scheduled for October and November 2019 releases but after that, Timelapse will be pretty high up on our priority list.”
A year later it's pretty clear to me that Atomos isn't interested in honouring its advertised features.

Is there a tutorial for dummies?

I have the Ninja V and record in ProRes Raw, and those it is nice to practice with it I don’t find it extremely useful yet. As technology advances and more people get HDR phones and TVs I can see this being useful, but right now it’s not that critical to have for most projects I shoot.

Can I not record ONLY externally with the a7iii? When I hit record on the ninja it does not activate recording on the a7iii. This thing is so confusing it’s literally brought my workflow to a halt. I need help.

I have a Shinobi monitor and I'm quite happy. I suggest one improvement. It would be very beneficial if the zebra could be stored in two or three memories. Frequent setting changes for different situations are very inconvenient with the slider.

OK BUT what if your final output IS REC709 for SDR TV...how do you adjust the IRE.....do you still record as it describe here? Cause when you select the 709 it show it blown out...i still don't get how you get proper Rec709 from this example

Why do the highlights seem to crush on the monitor at about 700?

Jeremy I own an atomos ninja v and use it with my Fuji x-t3. I noticed when shooting a standard picture profile my black are absolutely crushed when I play my video back in davinci. My luminance data appears to be significantly reduced. In F log it appears to be fine but I don’t want to shoot in f log all the time. Am I doing something wrong here.

Do you know why when shooting same scene in camera Lumix S1 and in recorder Atomos Ninja V results are different. The file in camera has less contrast and you can see details in the dark areas and the file from Ninja V has more contrast and crashes blacks. Do you know what is the problem and how can I fix it? How can we trust Ninja V to expose correctly when it is crushing blacks and camera is not crushing them?

I am having problems with the Atomos not giving me the correct display from my camera. It is showing up oversized. I put the correct camera in as input. Can you help with this?

According to Peter Gregg he says that you will not get a clean 24p HDMI export from the canon 90d . Is that true

I am using Ninja V with Lumix S1H. PQ mapping with Vlog V gamut works best at ISO 640. I installed Panasonic L- luts for monitor. BTW, do you have a fix for the latency issue during recording? Will your updates in 2020 for Pro res. RAW out from S1H solved the problem?
