Working as of today with oracle linux 8. Just had to use xfs_growfs instead of resize2fs as already pointed out. Thanks a lot!

Just what I needed thanks. I was on red hat. It was slightly different. At the end resize2fs will cause an error. Just swap the command for xfs_growfs and it works perfect!

wonderful to the point article , great job , as someone already pointed out for centos environment xfs_growfs is the command in the final step to refresh the volume

I am following those steps in a VM with Centos 7, but it does not display anything with command vgdisplay. Why?

Thank you. In Centos 7 default filesystem is xfs.
xfs file system support only extend not reduce. So if you want to resize the filesystem use xfs_growfs rather than resize2fs:
xfs_growfs /dev/root_vg/root
Note: For ext4 filesystem use:
resize2fs /dev/root_vg/root

The easiest way to extended partition in ubuntu is use gparted, "apt-get install gparted"
