These 3 guys are fabulous. True story: many years ago, I was working at McDonald's as a burger flipper. Behind me was a tall guy named Larry, who did prep work. He was a very grouchy person. I made it my goal to make him smile at me. I did all sorts of goofy things, and it took some time, but one day, he blessed me with a shy grin. Then 2 of my other co-workers, DC and Jennifer, hopped on my 'make Larry laugh' band wagon. We sang great songs very badly, threw food when the manager looked away, etc. The four of us got to be friends. Larry wouldn't let us into his boarding house room. We wanted to know why. So we pestered him mercilessly until he said "Okay, but it's a mess." A mess was putting it mildly. We had to step UP to get in, on top of God's everything. We said nothing about it. We all huddled on our various piles of whatever, and Larry pulled a guitar out of somewhere, strummed it with well-practiced fingers, and began to sing softly. Then we watched shy, grouchy Larry belt out a song no one ever heard before. It was was like watching a miracle happen. Afterwards, we asked him what that song was, and he said "I don't know, I just made it up." "Just NOW?" "Yeah." Then he pulled out about a hundred sheets of paper, right full of lyrics he had written. "How many songs are here?" "I don't know." "How long did it take you to write all these?" "A few weeks." Minds: BLOWN. Grouchy Larry was a musical prodigy. One Saturday later, we all went up with trash cans, buckets, brooms, you name it cleaning stuff. We sat Larry in a chair in the hallway and handed him his guitar. He played and sang for us while we made his room sparkle. He cried when he walked in. Funny how beauty can be found in the strangest places.
