Did you ever make the vidoe about setting up the server to receive emails and Amazon to send them? I searched but couldn't find it. I have a few use cases for this so would be interested to see your appreach 😊

That is the kind of advice from someone who doesn't want to spend too much time setting up a mail server, which (in the long term) and with a good setup, can run for years without any trouble. You can install a simple email server in your network. The only thing you should consider is what is better for the company. Use an online service and pay yearly for or install a local email server which means money and infrastructure. By the way, a local server has a bonus: implementing an email server will probably imply an LDAP service, an extra layer of protection in the platform.

It's not about bad apples who send spam, it's about big companies monopolizing the email protocol and making it into a service.

What if you just create a mail server to receive for imap usage. So that your server can then run an algo to clean up existing spam mail for the client?

Dedicated IP with the reputation is the KEY. If you don't have any, use a relay server to SEND your outgoing deliveries.

Title should be, setup a mail server, but know what you're doing. I've been running my own mail server for years at home. It works fine. Indeed, make sure you can comply with all the requirements. Freedom Internet in The Netherlands is a good Internet provider.

You're not wrong,, but I have self hosted my own email for the last 5 years. I had to switch TLD last year because some odd email providers (none of the big ones) started to consider some TLD as spam. Other than that it's been great, I am on full control of my data. I know with a high level of certainty I know my emails are not being read.

My only consideration is to not run it at home, but use something like Linode or Hetzner because they are huge data centers with good uptime, not a domestic setting.

Yunhost makes getting an email set up 99% of the way in like 15 minutes. It takes care of DKIM and lots of other stuff. You can always test your email's "spammines'' with various online tools.

Anyway, good video it gets the discussion rolling along.

As someone who ran an MS Exchange server for years, I agree with this. DON'T DO IT!!! Besides the spam and delivery issues, MS EXCHANGE IS CRAP!! It WILL break every time you have an off day. It WILL break in the middle of the night for no reason. It WILL break after every update. Updates that take 6-7 hours to complete. In other words, you will be staying up all night to run an update and then nothing will work after it runs. I cannot tell you how difficult it is to troubleshoot MS Exchange after working a 28 hour shift with no sleep. MS Exchange makes IT professionals everywhere want to commit s3lf h@rm. Save yourself, just pay for a service that has support.

My IPS has given me a fixes IP, so in theory, everything else is knowing the right steps to set it up correctly. Why not just give the instructions along with the warnings while specifying that you need a fixed IP. I'll figure it out on my own I guess

This is very defeatist. Self mail serving can be very rewarding and satisfying, but there are some hurdles. Planning, followed my some experimenting will get you sending mail to even Hotmail with no problems.

I have mixed feelings about this video. On one hand I kinda agree. On another this discouragement is counter productive. Afaik if you could have static IP you can usually ask from your provider to set PTR. It is not as if it didnt exist, there is usually generic rDNS which just has to be set to proper value. Yes, it is pain in the ass but it is for sure possible.
Much better way would be to describe pitfalls and complications and instead of just saying it is a bad idea. All you need is knowledge. With investment of couple of days you can set it up no problem with all necessary security features.

You're just lazy. Avoiding the hassle. Having your own email server is crucial to you being in complete control of your emails. The deliverability issue is for the weak. I have mails that always hit inbox, more than 10k a day. And I am ultimately in control of it. If I succeed or fail, it is only my merit or fault. The incompetent avoids difficulties.

I have it setup through amazon SES. Works great, and it's basically free for how much I use it. The reason I went that route is because google decided to start charging for my personal domain and I just didn't want to pay for it. The only downside I have with Mail Plus from Synology is that the spam filters are not the best. I get spam that comes through the filters quite often. Especially the viagra ones where there's no text but just an image.

This is disappointing as hosting my own email was one of the things I was wanting to do for privacy. Synology videos on hosting your own mail server make it seem so simple. So even if we set up a domain with Synology it won’t work? Quick connect continually back checks your ip address with your nas so it knows your ip. So that wouldn’t serve as authentication that you are who you say you are instead of a spoofer if you’re using a domain set up with Synology.

Dynamic DNS will fix most of what you were talking about and takes all of 10 min to set up. ISPs however do actively block common email ports which is why your local email client connects over IMAP. Anyway that most of what's wrong with this but good try.

This is true and it is not true in the same breath, It is not so much who you are, of what you do, it is about what you know. If you know your way around the functioning of DNS then it is easy to do, the problem is people like me who know how to do it will never share the information. What this guy just told you is 50% true, and here is why I say that, Gmail and all the other big mail services are dead set on grabbing the market for themselves they think that everybody had a gmail account so the rest of you can go to hell, It has become very clear that dealing with companies where you must email to a companies own mail servers your mail will always reach them and their policies are clear they DO NOT ACCEPT EMAILS FROM email servers who belongs to Gmail and all the big guys. THEY DONT! because Gmail has framed themselves as the sole spam sender. There are millions of emails getting past their "Spam filters" every day, just check you spam folder. Who has not received and email where it states that you have to check your spam filters if you miss emails. Gmail is breaking the Post Laws in the US, It is a Felony in the US for anybody to withhold you mail or open your mail. So for Gmail to send an email to spam is OPENING THE MAIL READING IT and then sending it to Spam. Wake UP! And there is no way Gmail can block your email if you take care of your RDNS. And if your IP is listed at Spamhaus, COMPLAIN like hell, in any case ALL Hosting services offer RDNS and the use of their SMTP service, as long as you don't send like 1000 emails a day, even Gmail has free SMTP services. SO don't be put off by Gmail and their attempt to be like Elon Musk, JUST TELL YOUR CLIENTS YOU DONT SEND EMAILS TO GMAIL. because they hijack your emails snif The all the packets for information like credit card numbers, phone numbers and then dump them in file 13. They steal your informaton on a daily basis.

I still think the tutorial would be useful - think about it like this - what if I want to sign up for things - but I don't want that company bothering my actual email - but they demand a working address, something they can send a link to? I can use my own self hosted email address - take the verification links, verify them and then let them spam the living hell out of, and sell that address to whomever they like and not care - just because I can't send email isn't the be all and end all of hosting your own email server.

Ah yes i love contributing to monopolies that now have the capability to dig through my information. eventually running a server of any kind will be "ruined by spammers and scammers" and blocked altogether. ah yes, more control to large corporations. thank you...🙄

This is not true. Any server can gain good credibility. If you start by sending only a few small emails with no spam in it, your limit grows over time and you're able to eventually send mass/bulk mail. It's called "warming up your smtp server". As long as you don't start getting flagged for spam you remain in good standing without being blacklisted.

To be honest, I don't think anybody should be using gmail or Microsoft for email. Their filtering systems have become so ridiculous that I now look in my Junk Box as if it were an inbox. Particularly is you are a school etc. Because they filter too many legit emails.
