Comparing Every Version of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Game | FLANDREW

Growing up, my family’s computer was “barely” able to run this game. ….but at about 10 fps. I have No clue how I had the patience to play through it like that, but back then it was either that or don’t play it at all.

Damn, that GBA game gave me a severe PTSD back in the day. I didn't actually mind the game design, although in retrospect it sure could use some major improvements. But THE BUGS. OMG, the bugs. I remember my copy freezing every single time upon entering a certain hall in Moria - thought it was a busted cartridge, but nope. Looked it up - lots of people had the same problem. So I just couldn't finish it.
A few years back I actually gave it another shot on an emulator and couldn't even get past Rivendell - turns out there was some sort of a common game-breaking bug, something to do with the chainmail. I just gave up and deleted the goddamn thing.
Kinda good memories overall, aside from PTSD, but then again, it must be just general childhood nostalgia.

Now, I think there are a lot more differences between the Xbox and PS2/PC versions. I haven't played the Xbox game fully but I played the PS2 version 20 years ago. I made it to Weathertop I think and all the levels until then were completely different between the versions.

i vaguely think i might've owned the vivendi game but never got around to playing it, don't know why, i played the two towers i think can't remember, definitely played the return of the king game and enjoyed it

The GBA game was my favorite. But there is a deadly bug in th Mines of Moria that can kill moment if you weren't smart enough to get help from Gamefaqs or neoseeker

I had the PS2 version when I was 9 years old and I could NOT beat the stealth mission where you have to escape The Shire. To the point where I thought it was literally impossible and not supposed to be beaten.

I would play the Shire part up until the black riders and just turn it off only to do it again a couple months later.

Eventually I started it years later when I was a teenager and actually passed that section. I couldn't believe I had actually done it and literally yelled in excitement before being completely disappointed in the rest of the game because it had aged so poorly at that point

The xbox colors look really washed out, is that just the game capture?

I played the GBA "Fellowship" when it came out. I got softlocked by walking out of bounds in Rivendell, so I started again. I then got softlocked at the exit to Moria. No idea how the game ends.

another difference with the Xbox version. Your allies disappear once its time for you to start the level. It's annoying as shit and makes me dislike the xbox version

Ps2 is brighter and less blurry, Xbox is slightly slower and has more blur. It does NOT improve with S video or component.

If you took "the two towers", you should've taken "The third age" as well, because it also contains some stuff from the first part! :) Very cool video. I made it to the end of the GBA version. It was a let down.. 😅

There was actually a 2003 mobile game version of each of the original trilogy games made by jamdat. Very hard to find video of it and even harder to find a copy, but it was a sidescrolling adventure that was incredibly impressive for a mobile game made 20 years ago.

They didn't actually invent the Nazgûl final Boss fight for the game, that is based on an encounter in the book, except it's Legolas who shot it down.

I had the GBA game. A game breaking bug caused it to crash when entering a door, I think in the mine maze. It might have been a problem with my save file, but I wasn't willing to start over.

Fellowship of the ring on hte GBA, I had this as a kid and god its awful, sure it was partially because I was stupid but I mostly wandered around and kept getting stuck in the forest section mostly because I kept getting pecked to death by the local wild life due to the sheer randomness of the entire section.
Hey fun fact, you have to buy a sword in order to affectly kill stuff, but you can collect just enough money for a sword, nothing extra.
However the sword is not mandatory andyou can by a firework rocket which is a powerful one use item, but technicality, you can softblock yourself, I was also playing Golden sun which is a far better RPG as Fellowship didn't have any of the RPG conventions.
you dont get alternative party members, nor do you get anything like skills or level ups, all you get is a simple physical attack.
Also there are no conventional things in an RPG like gaining some pocket money or items from enemies so eh.

I think this is mainly because the GBA Fellowship game was a Christmas present when I was a kid, and new games were few and far between back then for me so I HAD to get the most out of them, but I really enjoyed it for some reason. I distinctly remember being very impressed by the visuals,the music was actually very good and also it stuck very faithfully to the book for the most part,which I was also constantly reading at the time. There was a lot of random nonsense that you had to figure out, but that was good for me to be honest because it padded the game out and meant I'd be playing it longer.

Different time I guess,but I look back fondly at it. I also still have the game, complete in the box. Good times.

I'm playing the Swedish DOS game Härskarringen (Fellowship of the Ring) and its prototype Bilbo from late 80s which is the most difficult and complicated text adventure game I had ever played which is like a literally basically a Middle-Earth survival simulator with very detailed gameplay such as hunger/thirst system, clock and day/night cycle. Not much info on the game other than it has mixed receptions for its very confusing gameplay and panned by Swedish Tolkien fans for not being faithful enough. I have no problem running the game as my first language is Swedish and have already a Swedish keyboard which you need but the game sometime uses rare phrases and words that I don't understand without a dictionary.

I think I had both the PS2 and GBA Vivendi games. Never got very far in either of them, couldn't figure out how to escape the Nazgul in Shire on the PS2 and probably just got stuck on some unclear bullshit on the GBA.

The fact the xbox version had boxes and stuff in the environment which could be interacted with explains a lot.
I remember in the ps2 manual of the game it says that Frodo can move boxes, yet nowhere in the game can Frodo move anything, it always confused me when i was a kid playing this

When I was a kid I played through the GBA version so many times. I absolutely loved it. Makes me a bit sad to see everyone hated it but I can 100% see why.
There were several bugs that the only way to fix were to restart the entire game.

I had the gba game and it cross when I got to this one screen in Moria every time and I could never progress past it

I have the Vivendi PC version and I remember it being really short like I beat it in one sitting
I remember it ending rather abruptly..... I'll have to go back and replay it to see if I'm misremembering how it ends

I could never get past the shire being chased by the Nazgûl.

the dark rider fail cutscene scared the living shit out of me as a kid too, i remember playing with the tv remote on my lap ready to turn down the volume and cover my eyes.
Took me a while to get through that part seeing as English wasn't my first language, and also I didn't know you could throw rocks.
When i finally figured it out I felt like a genius.

I remember fast forwarding back and forward during the dark rider scene in the movie to see if i could find some clues.
Ah i was such a dumb kid.

The Xbox version of Fotr was fire loved the little side bits like finding I think Balin chained up in Moria being forced to break rocks for the goblins

One important feature of the PC version (and possibly the others as well) of the book version of the Fellowship of the Ring includes the possibiltiy to obtain the most powerful weapon, a fish, by finding Gollum multiple times in the last mission!

It's funny the first game I feel like sometimes ps2 looked better and sometimes Xbox looked better for some reason.

I wish I could find one I remember playing in a local homewear store 🎮 where it was a perfect CGI version of the first film. Where U start off at the slopes of Mount Doom 🌋 fighting The Orcs

And second level was playing as Frodo on Weathertop up against the Ring-Waiths Nazguls
