Because this strategy has been used by gun manufacturers probably since the Buffalo Bill Show in the late 19th century. If cowboys are popular, everyone wants to be a cowboy. In that case, why not lean into the free advertising through gun usage in media? Why not present Abe Lincoln with a Henry Rifle to make a good impression, or why not outfit the Buffalo Bill traveling show with Winchester rifles?
