I was hoping this was an explosion or something 😖
ОтветитьHonestly I've never had much of a sweet tooth. Maybe I have an ancestor who survived this (and um, updated their DNA in response)
ОтветитьI wouldn't be surprised if this kind of tragedy happened again today. Like before, it's all about the dollars....
Manufacturer:
"There's plenty of people in the world to replace those that don't survive our cost saving measures. Keep adding that plaster of Paris." 🤨
Regulations are written in blood.
ОтветитьIf it was today, people would just use it as an excuse to forbid children from eating any candy at all.
ОтветитьStill better than milk duds.
ОтветитьFood fraud is a big problem in modern China
ОтветитьYikes! So...instead of drywall, let's use a deadly poison to make humbugs...
ОтветитьRegulations are too quite often paid for in deaths. Too bad the alcohol and tobacco industry have managed to squeeze by on that one...
ОтветитьSmart, nobody got punished for accident, but learning a lesson together.
ОтветитьIt's not fair, innocent people die all because of greed.
ОтветитьExcellent video. I live near the cemetery where HumBug Billy is laid to rest.
ОтветитьI'm impressed with the police for figuring out the cause rather quickly in those days. 2,000 deaths were possible but just 21 died. Although still terrible it's amazing more didn't succumb.
ОтветитьWhy did a druggist even have gypsum in the first place?
ОтветитьBradford is one of the worst cities I've been to. I didn't think my opinion of it could get any worse until I saw this video.
ОтветитьWhen ever people tell me that we should deregulate the markets I show them videos like this.
ОтветитьIt happened in Ontario recently. Poisoned spice.
ОтветитьAh yes modern safety standards
looks at 2007 china
Somebody tell companies to stop adultarating lamb with mutton already!!
Ответить-NOOO! This button launches all of our nuclear missiles!
- So wich button gets me a latté?
- The other one sir.
- What Idiot designed this thing?
- You did sir
- Fair enough... Wilson Fire somebody!
It reminded me of that scene lol....
Who puts cyanide next to gypsum and sweets?!?
i was born in Bradford and this is the first time i heard of it.
ОтветитьWhat even is gypsum, and what is it used for, I never heard of it before now?
ОтветитьThere's a very different form of mass poisoning going on in the US. It comes in the form of perfectly acceptable LAB CREATED chemicals that mimic food stuffs and this garbage is in EVERYTHING, all for the worship of the Almighty Dollar. Garbage is much cheaper than decent food.
ОтветитьNothing’s changed. Look at your average supermarket food labels and the amount of chemicals we ingest is unbelievable. It’s just a slower process of poisoning.
ОтветитьExcept for ultraprocessed "crap"...
ОтветитьThe lesson here: don’t cut corners kids. Do things right
ОтветитьWow.
ОтветитьI love candy, so that is such a nightmare!
ОтветитьPutting powdered gypsum in sweets isn't really a bad thing. Today, its actually a source of dietary calcium. Its also used as a coagulant in tofu
ОтветитьHoly shit, watching videos this old without the intro theme felt so old I did a double take bruh .
Ответить"Accidently"
ОтветитьThe more I learn about the Victorian era, the more I laugh when I hear folk say we need to make food the same way as our great grandparents did. Even here in the US they were adulterating food during Great Depression. Also, in the mid-1800's was the whole Swill Milk distillery-dairy industry in NY that killed 8000 babies in a year and had cows in atrocious "living" conditions and that the milk was vile and contained things like (depends on the sources because some go into it and some don't) river water, pureed calve brains, along with other ingredients like eggs, plaster of Paris, etc. The milk was sent to the porch of a newspaper owner, and the rest became history. ALL I KNOW IS that if I ever get a chance to go back in time I am going to pack some MRE's or something to take with me, and ways to purify water, bring a bag of flour, and bring some powdered milk and instant coffee.
ОтветитьNot totally true, what about Mad Cow Disease and what about GMO in our food? Just because we think it's safe doesn't always mean it is. Though we have come along way since then. Poor Kids.
ОтветитьAlmost all regulations are a direct result of either people losing their lifes or getting injured.
ОтветитьThat explains packages of food that say "made with REAL....". Hmmmmmmmmm.....
ОтветитьJust imagine being able to buy 12 pounds of arsenic
They got a whole damn barrel of it in the back!
Why did they even have arsenic though??
ОтветитьUnsettling fact: the Victorian era is now when we start to see cleaning products show up in the market and they too, were unlabeled and also put next to ingredients so instead of putting baking soda in those cookies you’re gonna bake, you could’ve put caustic soda and absolutely destroy your throat after eating it. Strychnine had probably the most awful and agonizing reaction when consumed — painful muscle spasms, convulsions increasing in intensity until the backbone arches as far as it can go. Eventually you’ll die as paralysis of the neural pathways that control your breathing will lead to asphyxiation. You’d usually die after 2-3 hours of the initial exposure.
Eventually after enough accidents cropped up left and right, the cleaning products were labeled and advised to be put somewhere else rather than where the ingredients are kept.
today, strychnine is used as a pesticide usually for rats.
Any food made in a factory in the modern era is deadly.
Ответить" they don't make them like they use to" 😂
ОтветитьThat was amazing detective work for the times to work out so quickly that the sweets were the common denominator in the deaths. Especially with so many other infectious diseases around.
ОтветитьWhat were they using the arsenic for, anyway? I know that it was used in rat poison, but surely 12lbs would cause anyone to double check!
ОтветитьI heard about this in Hidden Killers of the Victorian Home! So cool to see the actual story in detail!
ОтветитьSo that’s where they got inspiration for The Unknown!
ОтветитьWhat many don't realize is that we are currently undoing many of the regulations and procedures that came out of experiences like this. More and more 'drugs' are entering the market in the U.S. without proper research due to the idiotic category known as 'supplements.'
ОтветитьHappy Halloween! 🎃👻🕷️🕸️🍬🍭🍫
ОтветитьThey also ate chalk in bread and "ice cream" lead and mercury. Its no wonder so many died back then
Ответить
