Disclaimer: I'm a Software Engineer at Microsoft, but I do not work on the OS team. I'm only here as a viewer who is subscribed to the channel. I decided to test out your guys hypothesis and I was able to reproduce it! I setup a test where I had a laptop running Windows Powershell listening on a port while connected to power. Every time a client connected, I would print the time at which the connection was made. From another PC, I would send a packet to that laptop and see the message being printed out. I then put the laptop to sleep, and after five seconds I would send another packet to the laptop. I then waited a minute and resumed the laptop from sleep.

The following behavior would change depending on whether or not the laptop was connected to power while going to the Sleep S0 state:

- If the laptop was connected to power when I hit "Sleep", after resuming from Sleep I would see the powershell window with the messages printed out with the time at which the laptop was asleep
- If the laptop was NOT connected to power when I hit "Sleep", after resuming from Sleep I would see the powershell window with NO messages printed out
- The above behavior would not change independently of what I did with the power cable DURING sleep - that is, even if I removed the power cable during sleep, then sent new packets, after resuming from sleep (with the power cable still disconnected) I would see the messages printed out, meaning the laptop was S0 Network Connected even on battery. Bug reproduced. Btw, the opposite happens if I connect the laptop to power during S0 sleep (no messages are printed).

I will try to contact the OS team with your findings and my test setup :)
Thanks guys! This is great investigative journalism!

For reference, my laptop is a Dell Latitude 7420 running Windows 11 22621.819, default UEFI settings.

Powershell code for reference:

On the server (laptop):
```
> $Listener = [System.Net.Sockets.TcpListener]52134;
> $Listener.Start();
> while($true)
> {
> $client = $Listener.AcceptTcpClient();
> Write-Host("Connected at " + $(Get-Date));
> $client.Close();
> }
```

On the client (another pc on the same network):

```
> $hostIp = "<machine network ip>"
> $port="52134"
> (new-object Net.Sockets.TcpClient).Connect($hostIp, $port)
```

I have a similar but related issue with modern standby. My laptop was, even if just sitting on a table for a few hours, going into hibernate, while hibernate was disabled for all settings. I have lid close set to "do nothing" also.
According to the event logs, it eventually goes into "modern standby." Then a couple hours later is hits 100*C (373K in event logs) and windows then forces it to hibernate. Either the sensor isn't being read properly in this mode, or modern standby is turning off the fans while still drawing too much power to sustain and causing the system to overheat.

My Asus Tuf laptop goes into hibernate after staying on sleep mode for like 10mins. It actually isn't much of a problem since its SSD is fast enough to make it turn on in 2secs or so

Here's the funny thing: Windows 11 on my 2022 model ROG G14 says that S3 sleep is not supported by the system firmware, but if I reboot into Linux, S3 will activate with no problem. I've disabled modern standby and I just have the system hibernate (its default option) when I close it because I'd rather wait a few extra seconds for the laptop to resume than have it draining its battery in my bag.

I have the Yoga with the amd 7735u prozessor and standby works great. I looses 2% battery every 5 hours that's acceptable. And I never had a blue screen or something like that.

I think this may be the reason I developed the habit of shutting my laptop off before closing the lid. It may take a few seconds longer to boot up the next morning, but the battery lasted through the next day.

It happened so many times with my previous laptop. I had to replace two batteries, because the batteries died due being completely drained. I used to put my laptop to sleep every time until this happened to me. After that I barely used sleep mode I was too scared XD.

It's funny and unfortunate that S4/S5 on Windows is much easier than having it check the power state periodically.
Plus the majority of people who think it's asleep and barely uses any power.

The easiest way to fix this is to disable modern standby at an elevated command prompt: "reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power /v PlatformAoAcOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 0"
and then restart

The intro is literally me. I have never owned a MAC in my life. Until last week. I have a 2021 Alienware M15 and using basic Photoshop last less than an hour I have to shut down the laptop when I put it in my backpack because it does not shut down. Last week I picked up a Macbook Pro 16 inch. Never had a sleep issue and I was able to edit RED Raw footage for over 6 hours on battery. Never gets hot and battery life is amazing. Thank you Microsoft for showing me I have been wrong not to try MacOs and thank you Dell for making laptops so shit I had to switch! (Dell also misled me by saying the laptop had DP on the rear USB C. Turns out it took a year for them to push a bios update that allowed me to do that When I called Dell they said I was using a noncompatible dock. I asked them which ones were compatible they said none and also said there were noncompatible adapters). I sometimes game and when I do I use my Alienware otherwise I am now a full MBP user and it has saved me a ton of time and money!

Had the same issue, I would literally wake to a burning hot machine and I thought maybe it was my laptop since its kinda old. Luckily, I noticed this was a windows specific issue because I had a dual boot install and everytime I closed the lid on windows, it would not come back on no matter what or how long I pressed the power button, while on Linux it was just fine. Switched completely to Linux since

This used to happen with my older 8th gen Intel Dell Inspiron and it also happened with my 9th gen Intel and 5th gen AMD gaming laptops. For this reason, I bought a MacBook Air M2 to use daily and kept the gaming laptop at home because it would drive me nuts and left me questioning whether my laptop would be charged in the morning.

Tip for AMD users: Get Smokeless_UMAF, unzip it on an empty fat32 partition and boot into the usb and check in there if your firmware supports S3 sleep. For my zephyrus g14 I didn't had an option in the bios and windows said it is not supported but the option is just hidden. You need to go to device manager -> amd pbs and then search for a standby option. It should give you s0(modern standby), s3 standby and some other options. DISCLAIMER! Do not mess with anything else as it can damage your laptop. Do what you want with this information

Some source claim that Intel processors with part numbers ending with "U" and "P" do not support S3 sleep regardless of system firmware implementation. I don't know if this is true or not, but interesting nonetheles.

Just use Linux. Also sleep doesn't mean off. SO things are still running even in sleep mode. This isn't rocket science lol. So even if you want to stick with that virus spy OS, understand that sleep doesn't mean off. Probably some of that windows loving malware running large cpu while in sleep mode lol. Lastly I would much rather run MAC than windows.

I have been trying to work out my dad's problem with his laptop and this is it exactly! He kept asking me why it was sitting with the fans spinning up/down etc while supposedly asleep. He frequently puts it to sleep on AC and unplugs it later while he thinks it's asleep...

Ответить
JanMichalSzulew
JanMichalSzulew - 08.09.2023 15:54

I forced my Dell Precision 5570 to be in disconnected standby even on AC. It works most of the time, although the battery drains in standby are usually still "red" in powercfg /sleepstudy report. When I say most of the time I mean my last three attempts at standby resulted in a hot laptop hibernating itself after 15 minutes (due to draining 5-8% of battery). Sleep study report indicates that the drain is caused by "CPU C0 Time.Non-attributed Time". And the trail basically ends there, Google doesn't really know much about what "non-attributed time" could in fact be. There might be something in powercfg /requests and /requestoverride worth looking into.

have you noticed that Microsoft is great at having a good product followed by a piece of crap? Why did Windows 11 take away my Windows 10 Start Menu with Live Tiles? If I wanted just icons I could leave them on the Desktop I wouldn't need them in my Start Menu as well? Why did Windows 8 not even have a Start Button or Menu just a big ass Metro page? Is Microsoft at war with Start Menus as is shown in Windows 8 and 11 despite the fact of having invented it in the first place? Why does Windows 11 Start Menu look like a Tombstone? No variety, no total app listings on the the left and Live Tiles favorites on the right? No way to organize programs and folders into categories? Why does Microsoft offer options to their customers only to take them away at a later date? Yes sure it could get complicated like all of the choices in Linux distributions but why introduce options only to take them away on the very next product that you have to use or else you won't have support from Microsoft.
