I bet it was so scary to be in a bomber in combat! All those boys had to have nerves of steel, I always imagined tail gunners or ball gunners had a death wish or just no fear but was one of the most important jobs on a plane for defense!

The Nazis wouldn't have won WW2. The Ford plant at Fairmile was spitting out a B-24 bomber every hour; they didn't stand a chance.
I had a friend who was a tail gunner in a Lancaster. He said "The oldest guy in the plane was the pilot, he was 21, we all called him Pops."

Been a fervent reader of WW2 air war since a kid. Had actually read both vol. of the History of the RAF in WW2 before I had left junior school in 1951 .
The failure to find targets at night before navigational aids is fair criticism , less justified is the perpetual reference to Dresden. The death toll at Hamburg was far higher .
Never mentioned with Dresden is after the RAF's night raid , its was the turn of the 8th AF. According to some accounts the smoke plume from the city rose 25000 ft into the upper air. Bearing that in mind explain how could the American B-17's fail to find Dresden and bomb Prague by mistake 75 miles further south. Eh !

I was looking for this documentary to rewatch it after seeing it on television. This version seems to have a lot of shortened and missing clips. Does anyone know where I might find the full documentary?

As a Yank--------and one who was fortunate to spend a few precious days in England, I say " Thank-you " to the men who flew The Lancaster's in WW2. The courage of those men is what keeps us free today. Like my Father , who fought on Guadalcanal, they truly were, " The Greatest Generation " .---------MJL, 76 y/o

I cannot begin to understand the bravery of these 22 year old men. Can I honestly say todays 22 year old would be capable of such a feat. I think most of us old guys know the answer to that is a resounding no. However I am sure they can could up with a suitable insult to the comment. For sure an era when Men were Men. Thanks to all the people who gave their lives for the rest of us on all sides of a horrible and hopefully never to be repeated war.

it is easy to say in hindsight, but I have always wondered why they did not use the mosquito to conserve aircrew given their far higher survival rate also their accuracy likely offset the much smaller bomb load. if half of them are fighter bomber then any German fighter needs to assume it is the dangerous version

I watch these videos of WWII and see what is happening in Ukraine right now and I wonder how someone could know the devastation, destruction, agony and death and wish to see it happen again. What is wrong with mankind that such people can exist generation after generation.

My grandad was a badass, At 14 he stole his brothers Id and joined the first world war, married my granny at 17, in the second world war made boots, gloves and helmets for aircrew, was in the home guard and in his spare time did bridge training with the Americans based locally. The local recruiting office had his picture and sent it far and wide to ensure he did not sign up again...

My father was a navigator on an Avro Lancaster 50 Squadron at Skellingthorpe 1942-45. After he passed I found out from his service records he had found a way to improve the accuracy of his navigation for which he received a special mention in dispatches. His method was passed onto other crews. The Lancaster crews particularly during the night bombing raids would become disorientated with all the enemy flak in the air and became sitting ducks for the enemy fighters and anti-aircraft guns. A big thankyou to all the aircrews, ground crews, servicemen and women who served with my father in Bomber Command during WW2

The Lancaster was briefly thought of being used to drop the atomic bombs due to the payload it could carry. It was decided to use B-29 because the Lancaster didn’t have enough range.

"Dresden? There is not such a place any longer." "I want to point out, that besides Essen, we never actually considered any particular industrial sites as targets. The destruction of industrial sites always was some sort of bonus for us. Our real targets always were the inner cities."

I guess they did exactly this. Official numbers of dead in dresden like 25.000 (this when like the whole city was 3 times bombed and totally burnd down while there where like 1 Million people).
Inofficial numbers like 250.000 - 500.000 (refugees, woman, children and olds). Survivos said that allied even used fighter jets to hunt down civilians.
Whats the diffrence to other warcrimes?
