For any Newbie, trying to build an app, while watching this video; don't worry, you're not cheating, this is the best way to learn.

Also if you don't understand, Kotlin, please don't worry, bear with it and after, yes after you have finished building this app, go on to Kotlin website and play with the code, and the playground, I promise you, not more than one day, is enough for migrating to Kotlin from Java.
Follow Up:

Both the APIs have issues. Rather look for a different API , integrate them as per your use. And also Google " Singleton Class" and implement it for better optimization.
