When your Unraid flash drive fails...Don't panic.

I highly recommend you use a NVME in an usb enclosure with a WD Red NVME for unraid for the best reliability ever.

I have an 18-disk server and I thought mine was big. Wow, yours is huge. Of course, I am not a content creator but simply use mine for Plex and automation in the house. But I have a lot of movies and TV and I am adding all the time when I pick up something new at a yard sale or two on DVD.

I really wish unraid would get with the times and allow installation to a drive. I have to replace usb drives once or twice a year cause random things happen to them. At least it’s easy to download and reload the usb stick, providing you back your flash up to the unraid account servers

To the people saying Unraid is bad because it uses an USB drive as boot drive.. You do know Unraid loads the entire OS (a few hundred megabytes) into RAM.. right? If you change stuff in Unraid, that stuff will get written to the USB drive. The past 19 days, I've had 1142 bytes written to my USB drive. 211.000 bytes read, but that's because I take daily backup of the USB drive. If you use a good branded USB drive, you won't have to change it for many.. many years.

This is why you don't use a USB flash drive, they aren't designed for 24/7 use. Get a $20 SSD and clone it every so often. Or better yet, get 2 and Raid 1 them. I use TrueNAS and that's what I did after a USB flash drive failure. Just use the software raid in bios for the boot drive, or if you have a real server, the hardware raid.

One of only a couple things that prevented me from going the route of Unraid is their decision to only give a USB as an installation option. The other was the lack of native ZFS.

Death to the Unraid My Servers plug-in. If it's on someone else's server, it's not your data. There really should be an alternative solution for migrating licenses.

I was having trouble out of one of my unraid flash Drive's the other day ..got a bunch of errors & it said replace usb disk as i just did about 6 months ago from a sandisk 16gb 2.0 to a 64gb Samsung 3.0..so i just did a reboot & that was it every thing looks good now for about a week or two ! ! Hope ya get if sorted out..i know i panic /worry like a mother when i half to take either of mine down..2 Unraid servers + 2 TrueNas servers & pfsense server & all are in my 27U rack but one dual 2200va ups's

Keep a back up file to make new USB... No issues at all....

I would recommend just using small SSDs in raid1 or mirror yea its a little overkill but it would last much longer or satadoms if thats an option.

Good to know! I'm in the process of updating my plex server. I need to be able to transcode 4k. So I'm just stepping up to a 10850k & a gigabyte z590 master. It has 10g Lan on the mobo. only reason I picked it. My gtx1070 will not transcode all 4k movies. Something about hdr..if you know more about this, lmk.

For anyone wwith a Terramaster NAS make sure to update the firmware ASAP before you get hit with the latest encryption virus.

I'm using the My Servers plug-in it allows you to download the entire config and settings from their webpage and pro tip use the SanDisk USB sticks 5 years running and never had a failed USB (knock on wood)

If you didn't you should have the Unraid "My Server" updates setup you can go to the Unraid Forum and download a whole backup.

This is exactly WHY I will never use Uncrapraid... Flash Drive install only, and add slow writing and FAKE split drives.

Yeah, I understand that a flash drive is just fine, but I feel it's sketchy. I just installed my TrueNas on a cheap 64gb Sandisk SSD. And I save my config files once a month....just in case.

Just a reminder to test backups regularly. An untested backup is only slight better than praying. You don't want to learn that your backups are bad once the original has already failed.

never run an OS on a flashdrive, only do it for testing then install on a m.2 or a sata SSD...... these things fail much more than people like to admit lol

The whole USB drive thing does definitely have me considering redoing my system with TrueNAS and just building what I run in docker on Unraid to their own lite weight VMS
