TL;DR version:

D-Wave's quantum computer (which has been criticized by some in the scientific community for working more like a "quantum simulator" due to its low programability compared to IBM or Google's devices) solved magnetic systems of scales previously unsolvable/extremely time-consuming (an entire epoch, in fact) by conventional computing, they did this to prove that their device works for quantum computation involving quantum simulation and that this is a huge leap forward for their devices

As someone whose knowledge of physics has come entirely from the magazines on Brother Mouzone's reading list on the Wire, color me very skeptical. I tend to believe the articles that suggest we will need to become familiar with deeper, still hidden levels of subatomic particles as an early requirement. Then it will take some time to figure out how to manipulate them. That ought to take quite a while yet. Then we will possess quantum computers. That will herald the breaking of the Seventh Seal, causing, of course, the end of the world.

What will these machines from D Wave, IonQ, and others actually be used for? Calculations for missiles, space flight, ingredient measurements for scientists trying to come up with cures? What might they actually be used for because I don't understand how trying to solve the positions of magnets makes it anymore valuable than a regular computer.

Since I'm literally a few blocks down the road from D-Wave and understand their models quite well, I should make a note that D-Wave computers are HYBRID systems that use a classical computational approach melded with quantum anealing which makes their systems relatively inexpensive to manufacture and deploy. They are also a heck of a lot easier to program! The quantum decoherence issue whereby simply sampling any given qubit destroys its actual current value, can be skirted around via a more inference-based approach which allows the gross decoherence issue to be pushed aside in favour of a more simple/practical route than what the largest players such as IBM and Google are DIRECTLY attacking via their more complex but also "more modern" qubit technology.

Using an analogy, D-Wave is basically connecting the quantum-equivalent of a bunch of cheap but reliable V4 economy car engines in series to try and do the same quantum calculation work as a smaller number of very complex but super-powerful V8 and V12 race car engines that being built by the major Quantum Computing players.

It's merely a different approach by using a merge of classical von-Neumann architecture melded to quantum anealing techniques to get to an application-specific target market FASTER than IBM or Google can. I personally think IBM's recent work WILL BE the very real breakthrough that finally sends humanity over the hump of viable Quantum Computing ...BUT... I also think the methods IBM uses won't really be practical for at least 20 to 30 years while the D-Wave methods are quite usable for a narrow niche of math and engineering problems TODAY in 2024!

Using another automotive industry analogy, D-Wave is making economy car Qbit Calculators that get the math eggheads over to their location on a practical if not efficient manner without breaking the bank. IBM and Google are trying to build the 18 Wheeler Tractor Trailers of Quantum Computing which can carry the huuuuuge 130,000 lbs loads of the heavy-lift quantum computing work. It's all a matter of Different Strokes for Different Folks! If you need an economy car quantum computer TODAY that works well in certain niche areas then buy a D-Wave NOW! If you need a true heavy-lifter, IBM will have one ready in 5, 10, 20 or even 30 years. Can you afford to wait that long?

The regular vaugaries of Quantum Computing is like some FAITH RELIGIOUS BELIEF going up and down depending on who and what is DOING THE TELLING - small wonder that Quantum mechanics is full of scientist who like the English fellow Brian Cox ACTUALLY BELIEVES IN GOD - no bull-shit - in all my years in the Royal Society never met a single fellow member who actually believed in god - forfuckssake how the hell does his brain work - he must just repeat theory and data and dosnt do any thinking. Well for me Quantum computing like Brian Cox is absolute bullshit.

I think the computing vs simulation is just bs that competing researcher throw at each other. At the end of the day calculations were done and a numerical result was produced. In theory all classical algorithms can be made to run on a quantum computer, but it is not yet know if all classical algorithms have a quantum component to them. Meaning classical algorithms running on a quantum computer will be no faster than a conventional computer. With that said it means quantum computer are only good at solving certain types of problems. What D wave is doing is to concentrate on particular applications in this case annealing. There isn’t really a point in bogging yourself down in make a universal quantum computer in which it can run any algorithms but not any faster than something off the shelves.

I'm sure you know this , Sabine, as Ernst Ising was born in Germany, but please don't give in to the English mispronunciation of virtually every foreign (to the English) name.

You cant program an atom. So they are nothing more than a VERRY tiny abacus. Because they will NEVER! Be autonomous. What way is that electron spinning john?.🧐. I think its left. Yip left. Ow the latency🤣. You will eather have to manually operate it. Or you guessed it. Us a propper computer to operate it. Meaning it will be less efficient that said computer is on its own🤣. Somone is making a LOT of 💰. What a genius scam🤣. And the science community is to nieve to ask the right questions🤣. Wanna buy some snake skin guys. Makes you live forever 🤣

So... a Quantum Analog Computer? Since it cant be programmed to perform a general algorithm?

It makes perfect sense that the Analog-equivalent of quantum computers would find success before a digital one. To be really honest, these can probably be programmed to perform quantum chemical calculations, long before quantum digital (IBM-like) computers still struggle to find a meaningful usecase.

Enjoyed the report. Sabine is the best at illuminating progress in physics.

Like DWave, A company in San Diego named Mem Computing has been doing quantum simulations and has shown incredibly abbreviated compute times compared to the linear digital computer.

I believe there is a standards body that develops standard tests so that these companies that do q simulations can compete. For example there are tests for optimization and for finding primes.

I am not an expert in this area but will try to find out more to add to this list of comments.
