Unfortunately greed is a powerful motivator for some people. Business ethics should be taught in schools.

We had one of those clocks when I was a child. I used to love hiding it in a cupboard, just to see it glow! It is only years later that I learned about the Radium Girls and felt so guilty about the clock.

As a physicist who has been through radiation safety training (yellows suits, etc)... I don't think I can articulate just how horrifying and enraging this video was. Just a constant sinking feeling punctuated by disbelief/outrage. But even beyond the health physics... the greatest horror was the safety precautions taken by higher-ups in the company.

Even though Marie told her daughter to “ stay away from it at all costs,” she saw the importance of x-rays and decided to help.

My paternal Grandmother worked at the Elgin Watch Co. in Elgin, Ilinois circa 1908-1925. She was a book-keeper, so was not on the production line painting radium on watch faces. But several of the co-workers she knew got sick working on the line, and some eventually died.
