Before the relatively recent mass adoption of optics in the U.S. Army, Soldiers needed to qualify on targets out to 300 meters with their M16 or M4 with open sights. Marines trained to shoot even farther with just irons.

I inherited a K31 from my Grandpa who was shooting it semi-professional up to 350m
It's insane how well it still works, the shaft is a bit worn out - needs some sanding and re-oiling otherwise that thing is insane!
Built in 1952

Come on guys you know the K31 is NOT a Schmidt Ruben rifle. The K31 is made by Sig.

I live in Switzerland and I'm a member of the local shooting club in St. Gallen and even though lots of people nowadays prefer Stgw 90 (SIG 550) or the older Stgw 57 (SIG 510), my favorite gun to shoot is K31. One of the most popular rifle competitions across the country is to shoot 10 shots at 300 meters (~330 yards) using any of the Swiss service rifles (other guns are not allowed) and a special version of open sights called the diopter. I think the target is 1x1m and the maximum number of points you can score per shot is 10, meaning you hit a 10x10 cm or 4 inch circle from 330 yards. I'm pretty new to the local shooting club, but I was able to score 87 points with the diopter. My friend who is a complete beginner scored slightly over 70 points just with the stock open sights! He inherited the gun from his grandfather who got it from the army. The gun might be really old, but if you get one in a good condition, it still offers an excellent precision and accuracy. I've once asked in the store and they told me that a barrel in good condition can last around 2000 shots before being worn out. The guns are quite cheap here, around $300 for one in a good condition, but newly made barrels are also available, although they cost a whopping $1000 for some reason. There are also countless accessories for this gun that allow you to install a picatinny rail, new stocks (including polymer ones, alike for a sniper rifle) and who knows what else, but I don't know why would anyone do that to such a nice gun :D Thank you for making such a nice video!

My family give two of them for destruction, do never forget that these are MIL weapons, designed at that time to kill multiple men in a single shot. Their disadvantage was their weight, and small capacity (6+1 bullets) , the taking care is easy and robustness better than any modern weapons, they keep precise.

The army manual states: for the K31 point of aim 10cm below impact with sights set at 100m, 20cm below with sights at 200m and 30cm below with sights at 300m. The K11 iron sights start at 300m, so it goes as follows: aim 30cm below point of impact at 100m, 40cm below at 200m and 30cm below at 300m. If you cannot find GP11 ammo, you want to try lapua 155gr scenar-L, these rifles love longer bullets, forget 168gr SMK or 174gr FMJ. I load 46.2gr Vihtavuori N140 (min dose) and keep hitting the 10 mark at 300m (4 in.) with iron sights, so I stopped experimenting there.

I've only been able to stretch mine out to 300 yards, so far, but if I do my part, it does not miss. An excellent mechanism that only the Swiss could produce.

I am currently getting it set up with a St. Marie clamp on scope mount with a Weaver K6 scope. We'll see what that squeezes out of her, then I'll be getting a 12 power scope for some more serious target shooting (as accurate as the rifle is, I don't think I'll need more than that for most applications).

So, I was surprised that there were no further comments made on this fine rifle. The shooter was not seasoned and used to this run. The misses looked obviously due to shooter error and not to the rifle. This rifle will outshoot you! I keyhole and shot groups touching at 100 yds for me! ALso, try one of the scoped St. Marie mounts or the drill and tapped for a scope... makes this very interesting! Swiss Ammo is consistent !

I used to have two of these, one from the 30's and one from the 50's. Both still had the soldiers nametag in the butt plate. I traded one away. But I still have the one that was made in the 30's, along with a few cases of GP11. Amazingly good shooting rifle.

Alright, I gotta say it. Whether it's true or not is up for debate, but I think that Henry is a Europhile. Or, if this is even a known word, 'Westophile.' Maybe not so much for Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, but he seems to love America and have a lot of interest with mainland Europe, outside of the UK even though I sometimes find he speaks in such a way that I think he learned English in the UK.

Nothing wrong with taking interesting in European culture! I hear very little, if any, of his... well, I think either Chinese or Hong Kong heritage? That bit of the South Vietnamese guy having him, dressed in a manner that I think is perhaps Chinese in origin, which would be funny, considering the Chinese HEAVILY aided the Vietcong of North Vietnam.

I just watched the run with the very expensive AR and optic ($3500+). This seventy year old service rifle managed almost the same result, losing only three rounds to the youngster.
