Sad
King Thibaw invited the East India Company to come into Burma to trade, but they captured him and exiled him! And worst give a country and people as a gift to queen victoria! Taken the country poor, then plant opium in the golden triangle to go unto china thru yunnan! That how HK was lost! And
now drugs plague the world! Tis is A long apology england owes Myanmar!

I am really curious when they filmed this documentary because I saw greatgrand son with Min Aung Hliang whether to get permission to get the remains of King ThiBaw to Myanmar. At that time 2016 , the country's government is NLD, Daw Aung San Su Kyi. Why did he need to ask permission from the general. Realizing we have not gotten and known the taste of Democracy really cause me shocked.

It makes perfect sense why the Burmese people remember Mindon as their last king, as he valiantly defended Burma against Britain. In contrast, Theebaw, his son, made no significant contributions, leading to his being forgotten. This historical pattern resonates with Puyi, the last ruler of China, who later became a puppet of Japanese imperialism, further illustrating the impact of leadership on a nation's memory and legacy.

"Sick man of Europe" is a label given to a nation located in Europe experiencing economic difficulties, social unrest or impoverishment.Throughout the 1960s to the 1980s, the term was also most notably used for the United Kingdom when it lost its superpower status as the Empire crumbled and its home islands experienced significant deindustrialization, coupled with high inflation and industrial unrest – such as the Winter of Discontent – including having to seek loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Since the mid-2010s and into the 2020s, the term being used for Britain with  cost-of-living crisis and industrial disputes in 2023.

Myanmar has many dynasties. Every last king of each dynasty failed to unit the country. Among all, the history of king Thibaw was the worst for Being a puppet of his own men. Of course, no one remember him because he did nothing for the country.

Interesting but the introduction is tendentious and inaccurate. Thibaw Min came to the throne on the back of massacring any possible rivals, and then proved to be indolent and incapable of governing successfully in comparison with his predecessor Mindon MIn. It is debatable whether Burma, as it was, 'ever had a thousand years of monarchy'. "The royal family 'vanished', (if it had done so, this video would have had nobody to interview) and the country was plunged into war and the longest military dictatorship of modern times". Do you mean the British colonialists count as a military dictatorship? Some telescoping here for the uninitiated. Unfortunately, this wonderful country is currently plunged back into the darkness from which it desperately needs help to emerge. Nostalgia is not going to help.

As a mixed thai I'm sorry to hear about this. I have learnt the thai history about how Burma invaded thailand during the ayutthaya era since a very young age but thought that till now there were still the descendents holding some sort of power in the country but really didn't expect that younger generations are forgetting their royals who once ruled the country.

The granddaughter of our last King passed away two years ago. There are some direct decedents of our Kings and Queens in Myanmar. We all gathered together twice a year in Yangon and Mandalay on the occasion of alms donation to monks for the late King Mindon (father of last King) and King Thibaw until COVID-19 period. We are not so sure to have this kind of chance under this devasted country situation.

People forget that the Burmese kings were expansionists who liked invading and ransacking their neighbors. They weren't peaceful kings who kept to themselves. Somehow the Thais evaded colonialism even with a king as their head of state.

It’s a little surprising to me that very little was mentioned about the 1878 massacre of 100+ royals engineered by the queen in order to get Thibaw on the throne. Obviously this doesn’t fit very well into the narrative the video was emphasizing but it’s a pretty shocking, significant chapter in the royal family history.
