The letters in a word don’t always match the sounds they represent, and people can pronounce words in different ways. Lucky for us, linguists have tools to help understand and communicate speech sounds. In this episode of Crash Course Linguistics, we’ll begin our discussion of phonetics, the study of speech sounds, by talking about consonants, and we’ll also get an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet, or IPA.

Hey I know it’s a super boring topic but can you please do a crash course on Medicare and the healthcare system in America? I think there is so much information to sort through that’s so important for the American people to know, I wanted to make a slideshow for it but there’s no I way I could make it as interesting as the way you present your interpretation of the subjects you teach about.

Are there any languages with consonants that combine points of articulation, like a fricative in the back of the mouth and then a plosive near the front? I'm having trouble making a sound like that, but it seems like it should be possible

(IPA-ko orrian [ɣ] eta [x] entzun ditut eta bai, esango nuke lapurteraz/baxenafarreraz egiten den "r" hori [ɣ]-agoa dela [x] baino. Hala ere, nik uste frantsesez baino [x]-agoa dela, ez dakit... eta gipuzkeraz, nire ustez, [x].)

I am confused about why hanger is claimed to not have a velar nasal in it. In my phonetics class, I would mark it wrong if someone transcribed hanger (as in related to hangry) as [hænɡɚ] instead of [hæŋɡɚ]. If it's hanger as in the tool used to hang clothes, it would need to be [hæŋɚ].

here in UK if you work in Early Years, teaching children phonics, you have to be careful not to pronounce the schwa after p, k, t etc...
