Stranglehold imo had the best implementation of a cover system. Mainly due to the destructible environments, you could use it to take a quick breather but it punished you if you stayed there because you'd be a sitting duck.

I replayed KS on stream for some friends for the sake of posterity. Imagine if Namco had realised what a gold mine they were sitting on with this mechanic and capitalised on it before Epic took the premise out from under them.

Try Reservoir Dogs game, for its budget it has a unique gameplay: you can take people hostage and choose non lethal route, or go guns blazing, or why not - both)
It's a guilty pleasure of mine

This and Winback 2 inspired every 3rd person cover shooter we play today. Winback 2 was rough as hell tho
