'Junkyard Engine' my ass. The only part in this whole thing that isn't a new aftermarket piece is the f__king block. Like 'restoring' an antique hammer by replacing both the handle and the head.

I like the FE, but i dont see the logic in building a street engine with a powerband at 4k-7k unless you just really hate your neighbors. 700 to 3500 rpms is where a street engine lives 99.99% of the time.

We drag race the Ford FE way back in the early 70’s. No one made any aftermarket stuff back then. You could get a aluminum intake but it wasn’t a better design that the cast iron it was just a lot lighter. We ran a 447 CI which was the standard 427 4.230 bore with a 428 crank which was 3.98. TRW made the pistons so it was a budget way to gain some cubic inches. Comp solid roller. Single Holley 850 with stock Ford Tunnel Port heads. It probably made about the same power as this combo. I would love to had the aftermarket pieces you guys had here to see what kind of power. With a standard bore 427 with the 4 1/4” stroke crank you guys used here it would be a 478 CI.

The hydraulic roller cam they picked (254/262 with .670 lift) is a popular BBC drag cam. Its advertised duration is 298/316. The three top solid lifter cams from Ford were: C3AZ-6250-AA
306/306 , .500" lift @ valve, 78° overlap

C4AE-B
324/324, .500" lift @ valve, 112° overlap

C8AX-D
330/330, .600" lift @ valve, 116° overlap
273 deg @ 0.050"

What was the compression ratio

Somebody needs to make inline four barrel EFI, ala the old Autolite Ford system.

so if they replaced the block it's a completely different engine than they started with....

I have installed a FiTech 38351 system on my Blueprint 427sb engine as the 1987 OBD1 couldn't be used anymore. I have been very happy with it and I wanted to see how much the FiTech system would add over the Blueprint carburetor system used for the base HP numbers from their factory. I was hoping that the fuel injection system would add more. This vid gives me an idea of how much more I can expect. Thanks guys.

Don't discard a 352..
The block casting has thick cylinder walls.
It can be bored .
Unlike 390, 428, 427 thin wall castings.
People discard this block because they don't know about a diamond looking at you....
If you pick the correct engine machine shop it can be a cross bolt main block.
Think of the power a FE can produce..
FOMOCO POWER FOREVER....
It won't be a cheap build.
Your Chevy friends will be looking at tail lights .

Look at the power they got out of a NON-CRACKED 390 block. It is just as good to do this as a single 4V carburetor, it made the same amount of power as it did with the twin hoop-te-doo. I have accumulated most of these same aftermarket parts.

All that time and money to gain 5 hp! Are you kidding me?

All that money for +4HP and +5lb/ft of torque... There's plenty of other places to spend that money! EFI on old platforms is a joke!

I don't remember what cam they ran but it made good broad power.

What Ford should have done is built the new 7.3 liter around the FE design, they sort of did but made improvements.

Can you refer me to an engine builder in Michigan that is just as capable as the two of you? And what could would I expect to be the cost for parts, paint, and labor? I am building up a new engine for my 69 Mustang S-code. I recall watching this video a year back. I started by taking in the bare block to the local speed shop to have the block cleaned, magnafluxed and inspected. I knew the engine had come out of a 66 T-Bird and had never been rebuilt, it had factory bores still. Now we're in the process of securing all the parts to build it into a 445 FE. Only the block, main caps, and front timing cover are going to be original, the rest will be all new.

It makes not even 10 horsepower more than when it was a carburetor setup, a waste of money in the power aspect

I love this sort of mix of old and new I would love to see a chev 409 with this sort of rebuild and efi setup

Question. I seen on the replacement block in pretty big numbers stamped 352 ,made me wonder if the replacement block was actually a 352 instead of a 390. Does anyone know? Just curious.

Maybe not a sexy topic - but maybe you should just do a show where you just fetch a half dozen potentially rebuildable blocks from random places - then just tear them down, clean them, and see how many are really potentially rebuildable? You guys seem to hit a lot of bad blocks - and it's important to show because it's being honest - but really, how often? Was there anything about the various blocks that could have told you they were/were not a good candidate?

An intake swap on an FE is no small job. And those cast iron intakes will kill you. 💪

One or two EFI's - the same power but only double the cost. That's called a 200% success!

Love the channel but why are all your salvage block seem to be cracked. I mean bullet blocks are nice and Ik it’s a roll of the dice but do you find them all outside or something idk. Is there anything you can do when finding a block to minimize the chance of it being bad.?

I would like to see the horse power/torque comparison between 2 carbs vs 2 F.I. units.

I had a 390 in my 71’ F-250 4wd. I stayed calm by putting headers, an Edelbrock intake and a 750 Holley dbl pumper. Couldn’t tell you how much power it made, but the upgrades really woke up that old motor. Thanks👍🏼 for sharing the video post. Best of luck 🍀to both of you guys 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

These heads flow 338cfm at .700 and can support around 700hp N/A. This video made almost 600hp with mild compression and cam. The cam held it back after swapping intakes.

There are about five different versions of that head. Which one is the correct one?

That cam setup probably cost more than all four of my cars
