I convinced a studio owning friend of mine to turn one of his spare hangout rooms into a referencing space. He has a good collection of luxurious equipment, and he often invites me over to check out his latest tweak. He says that traditional mastering setups pale in comparison.

everything is a reference; the term is largely meaningless

IMO my audio reference is subjective to my tastes and MY system. I don't have a massive system nor is it expensive. I have KEF speakers running through a Yamaha receiver with a ProJect RPM 5 carbon turntable. I also stream hires through a Focusrite 18i20 interface through that system as well. Reference to me are the titles that I think sound amazing through that system. And what I judge against those titles to see if they measure up. So while the true measure of reference to most may be what sounds best on really high end systems, it can also be what sounds good to you on your system. I know people who say Klipsch speakers are amazing. I hate them for their honkiness in the highs and mids. It's all subjective. Love your videos by the way!!

I was under the understanding, that REFERENCE LEVEL, is what is achieved in good movie cinema's and the sound levels needed, being the reference point, when trying to achieve this level at home, with a home theatre, needing big amp's and quality reference speaker's capable of reaching reference levels in your home theatre.

My first system from 1977-1979 is still my reference for upgrades. How much better is the upgrade and it it worth the money? Some upgrades got through, other potential upgrades didn't.

how to make file audio total amount of the sounds information processes is much greater with slightly reduced frequency range but up to 8 times more temporal resolution

How about recording a live instance of an instrument in your listening room, then play it back applying automated electronic room correction "referenced" against the live performance? What would happen? Would it merely reveal the shortcomings of room correction or just might it be a way to remove the room and microphone from the equation?

People choose what to reference all the time, and there is no 'right' answer. I guess you choose what you wish to reference based on what you are looking to acheive.
I like to use the sound of acoustic instruments as my references, such as an acoustic guitar and vocals, or a string quartet.
Not that I don't love all sorts of Electronic instruments and sounds, but there is a natural timbre to the sound of acoustic instruments that let me hear the musicality of the equipment under test. Once I've got natural sounding instruments, then the heavy rock or psy trance can flow.:)
We all pick our own reference recording for this type of testing.

Is the small 20 year old computer speaker, on top of the power strip, your engineer's reference speaker? :)

I agree with high quality acoustic music as reference.

So you "select" rather than "set" a reference. I know, semantics. 😄

In all cases , the reference varies with disposable income .

"Reference" is the most overused, yet useless term in audio!

My reference speakers: my Dunlavy SC-V, arguably the most accurate speakers ever built. John Dunlavy considered them to be the best speakers he ever built.

When researching to buy a camera I found the best reviewers had repeatable conditions set up so they could compare performance of equipment and settings in use. You can dig back in time and compare photos taken with today’s cameras with those taken years ago. And Because of the “reference” conditions, get a clear understanding of their performance capabilities. This is what any reference should be. Audio reviews then should include reference recordings, tracks they play through every piece of gear they test. Not just the tracks they’re in the mood for on that day. We the viewers can’t join them in their listening rooms but we can seek out the “ reference recordings” they use and get some idea of what they hear and don’t hear.

But what is “reference level” concerning volume?

Fatal flaw with any audio "reference", unless the listener's ears, memory, sense of being was at the performance that made the recording and direct involvement with the recording production with an audio path that can be directly traced back to the original performance, recording and recording production any try for a "reference" can never be any more than just individual preferences regardless of how much "experience" the listener has.

This is the fundamental issue, challenge and reality of music systems on ALL levels.

Isn't live sound musical performance using acoustic instruments the only true reference? 🤔

To have a true reference... the mics would need to be where your ears are. And, the speakers for playback would have to be relatively close, as to not add your own rooms sound. Or? Close mic the instruments, and have the speakers playback at the distance the instruments sat from you.
