some years ago this one girl who my friend knew shared a screenshot of someone dming her trying to groom her, he would send long messages talking about how he will change her life and she changed his and that their meant for each other and they need to meet up, she brought up that she was uncomfortable and they should stop talking and then all the toxicity poured out, i think she was a freshman at the time and the guy was in his 20s. it was cringe reading that dm but these things can quickly go from cringe to a nightmare especially if a meetup or extortion happens.

Thank you for this. I was sucked into an online cult 4 years ago by the content creator doing some of these things. They developed a parasocial relationship with their fans and groomed us by the dozen to pledge allegiance to them and have us all pay their rent for them. This is the long story short version, but it's important for people to recognize when they are being manipulated for the sole benefit of someone else, especially if they are being told that they are doing it for the benefit of humanity.

Hate to say, but it does hit home. In some cases the abuser can also be the same age as you.

Had this happen when I was around 14/15 years old. After being free from the situation I gradually started to realise. But it probably wasn't until I was 22 and coincidentally being diagnosed neurodivergent (nearly two years ago, 24 now), that I could grasp the reality of the situation, haunts me still that I just couldn't get out or see it sooner.

I know it's always better late than never, but it's never pleasant when the only way of being free is just when they get bored of the control or find themselves an outlet to absolve themselves from any sense of responsibility. In my case, my abuser found himself "in God". I'm trying not to hold any disrespect for religion but when others also seem to have excused it after "finding himself", I became a devout non-believer/Atheist pretty much immediately, wanting to disassociate from the monster as much as I could. Even if I was nice to them years later, I figured whatever I said or did must've been out of a trauma response.

But just know that abusers never change, they just find new ways of hiding it, or just hiding their horrible ways better in general.

I was groomed by an old man online from Missouri. I live in Canada. But when I was 9-12 I spoke to this 16 yo girl who was a professional model who wanted to be my girlfriend and wanted to pay for a plane ticket for me to visit her in Missouri from Canada.

Never was speaking to a girl.
Never seen again if I got on the plane.

Trust is a great movie that depicts these signs the victim should've paid attention to yet was too manipulated to see the clarity of how wrong it was of her to be involved with a grown man. Especially when said grown man was just using her and other girls her age or younger to get what he craved. like the wild animal all predators are.

I have been online groomed multiple times. By two different people at the same time when I was 12 and another time for 6 months when I was 13. I’m now 15, because of COVID and a lack of attention from my parents dealing with my autistic sister I turned to online. Parents pay attention to your kids

Ah! Chlorine, we should’ve seen the signs. If we weren’t so young we would’ve. (Chlorine is a code name for our very first groomer) after her the signs should’ve been more obvious, but they weren’t. It was probably our fault the 2nd time tho. Online or not grooming is not ok and it SUCKS (we can only speak from the victim’s perspective) trust us, we would know (sadly). I have met a few online groomers but usually I spot them right away unlike IRL groomers and usually their nature seems kind or assuring but then they ask you cheesy questions and it is then you know they are trying to get something out of you

Worst part is I still fell for it at the ripe age of 17. But I was extremely emotionally vulnerable so it got me in a lot of trouble
