that guy was very good at explaining how to prune trees and coincidently explained a lot of my issues for me.
ОтветитьI love your goats!
ОтветитьIn Sweden we talk about JAS pruning.
What is that?
It is a description of the months where it it good to do it:
July, August, September.
Then the tree will have time to start healing and dry up the wounds so they are less likely to get an infection.
Can you propagate those cuttings?
ОтветитьWish I seen it before
ОтветитьI would be quite keen to understand why he defaulted to central leader with all the trees. That young apple was the perfect candidate for an open centre/vase shape with 3 strong branches right around knee height. That really lovely peach tree was also the perfect open centre and the trees were really nice spaced that could accommodate open centres, so I would love to hear his motivation for trying to find a central leader when the tree was already in very much an open centre structure .Great video BTW and thanks for sharing 🌻
Ответитьthis is the nerdy botanist shit I live for
ОтветитьI would like to offer words of encouragement.
Ten years ago I cut my left wrist, dominant hand. With a power saw.
The blade severed the tendon to my wrist, the artery, and tendons and nerves to my thumb, my index finger , and my fourth finger.
With therapy and prayer I have regained all but some of the fine motor skills in my fingers and I’ve regained most of the mobility in my wrist.
At this point I can say that while it is sometimes a nuisance not have full mobility and limited dexterity in those fingers, it is no longer life impacting.
Be strong.
❤
Oh my gosh so great to see Mr. Peaches
ОтветитьI have to say, my first year, I planted my apple trees they gave me a bunch of little fruit, granny apples, and apple crisp, then wind took them all granny apple ,(nothing). Apple crisp, only one survived until the deer got to it🙄 so I ended up with nothing. Hope this year I do better. Great video.
ОтветитьWhy not just air layer those beautiful branches you are planning on pruning? You would need to prune the air layers as well before planting to give the roots less stress.
ОтветитьInteresting. At the farm I work at we prune our peaches to have a bowl shape rather than making sure it has a central lead. Making sure the sun hits the fruit is a recipe for the most delicious peaches!
ОтветитьJesus lady. We don’t have time for your chatter. Acute angle. Lady bug ADD. just get to the point. Edit your stuff down. Damn
ОтветитьI remember when I was growing up in this area there was 3 to 4 feet of snow on the ground this time of year, now there is no more than a light dusting to none.
ОтветитьDo this during dormancy a month or 2 before spring and save the scion wood then go to a local exchange or trade scion with others. Also great practice grafting wood for you own fun projects.
ОтветитьThat's interesting how Daniel talks about central leads or a main trunk in nut trees/stone fruit trees. I was always told that these trees need lots of air through them and to eliminate a central branch/trunk. The rule of thumb is to have the ability to throw a cat through your tree. It would be interesting to know his opinion on that. Great info on the leads having cyanide, similar to an apple's seed.
ОтветитьI've found that grafting an adult eye onto a juvenile rootstock will not only decrease the time between planting and fruiting, but makes the tree more manageable resulting in a tree with more fruiting sites and a far stronger trunk:height ratio, creating a lower center of gravity in case of high winds.
Cut any blooms that form during the first spring (ideally 2nd & 3rd as well for commercial farming) allowing the branch to become well established and become the main trunk.
Is it possible to propagate that clipped leader stalk?
ОтветитьLove you videos, the photo you used for this makes me smile every time I see it. 😊 thank you!
ОтветитьI have 20 or so 30 yr old fruit trees on the property we just bought. Peaches, plums, apples, and cherries. This year is the first time in like 15 years they are getting pruned. I was quoted $2800 so I just bought a few hand tools and a chain saw instead
ОтветитьJust discovered you today via your donkey video...your awesome..you did a wonderful job with the boots.....but they don't have a snip toes or the pretty stitching that makes that orignal boot look so good...
ОтветитьYou really are a jack of all trades. Cheers to your green thumb 🌻
ОтветитьRoot those branches - air layering before pruning will give roots as well
ОтветитьI’ve been trying to figure out pruning my young fruit trees and this is the first video that made sense to me and stuck in my mind. Love the use of the phrase “my precious,” that will really stick with me. Thank you so much!
ОтветитьScion use?
ОтветитьI see the Davey logo on his shirt - i worked with one of their arborists to try and save the only tree on my property - a 100yr old Norwegian maple - which kept pitching huge branches at my fence. Turns out, the tree was in too good health & the weight of all the leaves & small branches was pulling the big limbs off. Trying to figure out what could go and what had to stay to provide enough energy to sustain the tree (and how to manuever a cherry picker around a suburban lot) would have been much easier when the tree was the size of your babies.
... and then the tree exploded in a storm less than a year later, but that's a different story 😅
It is a pain in the neck, but the biggest spreader of disease in the garden is birds, insects, and pruning shears.
I always use and recommend tablespoon of Clorox and a gallon of water and dipping cutters in between cuts. Then a tree seal is also a good idea.
Also you wanna imagine how big you want the tree to get to pick out your central leader and horizontal branching.
Lastly, when you prune heavy like this you can remove new buds any time new sprouts are coming out in a bad area.
Huh. Down here in Georgia, I see all the peach trees trimmed in a - bowl shape? Without a central lead for sure, but also very horizontally oriented. I'm sure it has something to do with harvesting, but now I'm going to go look it up! I planted three trees three years ago...two cherries and a mulberry, and I'll be damned if they're not still only producing one or two leaves a year. Basically dead. Not an encouraging start! But seeing your thriving trees, well, it can be done!
ОтветитьI move the labels up to small branches.
ОтветитьWhy not propagate them
ОтветитьГраница земля-воздух у дерева не должна быть заглублена. Можно сажать на холмы (насыпи) когда тип корней дерева глубинные
ОтветитьI have seen the city and new house development plants new trees and stake them all regardless of the type of the tree.
ОтветитьI would have kept the same leader but those 2 big lower branches should have been completely removed. Let the other 3 get stronger. Also pruning promotes more growth. I've printed whole orchards. That's my experience, my opinion.
ОтветитьHi, Ann of All Trades, I'm so glad I came across this tutorial. I was searching out information on serviceberry trees, but this was also a nice refresher. Happy to be a new subscriber, and I look forward to viewing more of your videos. Thank you, outstanding!
ОтветитьCouldn't all those cuttings be used for cloning?
ОтветитьThanks for this video. I have moved onto 10 1/2 acres. We love it here, and we have planted fruit trees. I learned lots from your video today. 😊
ОтветитьNow I've heard that you can root the clippings. Is this true? I'm trying to start a peach orchard and the trees that I have already are awesome.
ОтветитьIsnt it possible to root those branches to start new trees?
ОтветитьVery informative. Thank you.
ОтветитьLol my first tree i climbed to take down was an old Leyland cypress, it was my first tree so i left the chainsaw on the ground an strictly used my handsaw a "Sliky Zubat" so i didnt make any tragic mistakes using the power saw, well low an behold i saw accross my dang hand bled like a stuffed pig, had to take care of it while in the tree an good thing i had my medical kit on my saddle i just taped gauze like a mad man put my gloves back on an carried on. Stay safe kids lol
ОтветитьYelp! Every part of the peach tree is toxic to animals. Cyanide overload. Why did you feed the branches to your goats?
ОтветитьBefore pruning, I would a air layered A few branches for more trees.
ОтветитьWhy didnt you try to root the cuttings???
ОтветитьIf I ever have to prune large branches. I’m definitely trying to propagate what I can! The cuttings kinda share the biological age of the plant they were cut from, so cuttings fruit faster! Then you can preserve the years of effort and gain new plants from a “loss”.
ОтветитьWould love some follow up video to see the progress after the pruning.
ОтветитьIN the wild, there is no pruning, and they grow...
