When talking about the need being further away by the road of trials I actually disagree. It is the want of the character that is being separated by the trials not the need, the need is actually the solution that makes the protagonist resolve the tensions of the story otherwise the need as no impact at the moment of the revelation.

great production! is the 8 point story arc by Dan Harmon or is this a derivative of an earlier published work by Nigel Watts?

I appreciate it but it also seems like a recipe for typical story arcs. I’d love to see the form grow. Also, the Dark Knight is overrated.

Not needed at all — just some arbitrary steps that the majority of successful screenwriters don’t take into consideration.

How to make a boring predictable story: teach everyone to tell a story the same way following an 8 step process.

1. you (establish the protagonist)
2. you need (protagonist needs externally / wants something internally)
3. you go! (protagonist acts / entering the chaos circle)
4. you search (protagonist faces obstacles)
5. you find (but its not as the protagonist expected)
6. you take (but not without paying a price)
7. you return (bringing home what you took)
8. you change (protagonist has developed)

Why is Harvey dent becoming the white knight ok w her

Just the hero's journey with different labels. I guess the answer is write a character arc, and keep adding conflict.

Dan Harmon is an amazing writer, but I don't know how this works for him. These points can't be equal parts of the story; you don't spend the last 15 minutes of a 2-hr movie on how the hero has changed.

@scooterdooter - 21.09.2023 05:26

Again: this is stolen from the works of Joseph Campbell. If Dan Harmon was capable of humility he'd stop peddling these ideas as his own. They just aren't. He's admitted it, but is still stealing it.

It looks as a slightly simplified adaptation of Joseph Cambell's "Hero's Journey". Nothing new. It doesn't take time to create this, just read 1 or 2 narratology book or maybe only wikipedia. It's so sad.

Lemme just say that it doesn't exactly work in this example. Nolan's Batman is a three part story and ALL of part 2: the Dark Knight, is CHAOS, with moments of humanity spread within.

It'd be better to say that each of these things has to happen, if not in the same order.

Like I said yesterday in the video about foil characters, subtitles are essential not only to understand whatever narrator, but the examples themselves. It's a feature that international audience appreciate a lot (like me, from Italy)

Why would you put a host of roblox between your protagonist and their need right when the things get complicated? It's no time to play around and have fun, I'd say.

dan didn't make this. he just simplified joseph campbells "the hero with a thousand faces". it was never 'his' to begin with. probably why this video even exists, to make sure no one sues them.

Don't love your characters too much, because they have to walk through fire eventually. Batman exploring a field of flowers for 2 hours would make for a terrible movie.
