Great video! I still think that success has more to do with execution than contrarian ideas, however. With 8 billion people on this planet, and a wealth of knowledge spanning back thousands of years, it's highly unlikely that any of us will ever have a truly unique, contrarian idea. Even the examples listed here, like Buffett's investments or Jobs' prediction of the home computer, were likely not unique at all. I'm sure thousands of people thought the same thing, but didn't have the means, drive, or desire to pursue them. Success was found for the few that actually did something about those ideas.

This is something very relevant to me, as a grad student publishing novel research. I realize that every idea I have is not novel in any way, it's something that has been thought a hundred times over. We're far past the days of groundbreaking discoveries or "eureka" moments. The way to success (at least in academia) is building off of others ideas and having the guts to try something that people just talk about. The idea is never novel, but someone has to do it to make it a reality.

Since when does 'getting ahead', 'success' having anything to do with making more money? Success literally means accomplishment, I don't see how making X dollars is an accomplishment

To be better than 99% of people in anything just means you are as good or worse than 80 600 000 humans on earth. (Not that special)

When society starts to focus on their own personal success rather than focusing on the success of society it becomes a major problem. Greed is what is destroying us now. Certain people want to live in mansions and drive fancy cars so they do everything in their power to get that and don't care how they get it. Politicians do this every single day.
