Maya is not hard to learn, it's code is just so dog shit and has so many loopholes it just crashes on it's own. The main reason why production takes SO MUCH to deliver a movie is because of the amount of crashes and restarts the pipeline has to go through. Not to talk about how dreadfully slow and noisy Arnold render is.

Hi, I'm a 17 year old art student, I recently set my eyes on the world of animation. I'd like to learn how to use these scary (in my eyes) software. Do you have any advice? Where to start from? Do you know any courses for beginners? Thanks in advance <3

i just want to say i have used 3dsMax, Blender and Maya. Maya is good for rigging and animations in my eyes. but thats all. maya just sucks. for real. terrible performance. I have no lags with max at all when working with high poly models. Blender is also doing pretty good. Now i have to work with maya because its required for the project im working on. and it sucks so much. Im unwraping a chair with 4000 faces and its laging on simple commands like: relax uvs/optimize uvs. im crying
What the fuck is that.

I thought a lot of companies write their own software, or only use Maya as a base and greatly expand its features with the scripting language.

I would love to try my hand at maya, but this program is not free. I tried to create in a blender but for me it's more complicated, I heard maya is clearer and easier to handle. I would like to seek opinions on this. Someone can help?

My opinion. 1. If you wanna work as a Motion Designer and etc in TV so go with C4D . 2. If you wanna work in game dev on 3A projects go Maya. 3 . If you wanna work in Movie VFX staff and Partical ETC so go with Goudini . 4 If you dont have specific field and wanna use it only for your self and freelance and not wanna go to industry and big studios.. so Blender is your choice .

Maya is hard to learn: but it's very very powerful for industry using
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
but i am blender user: it's easy to learn and including the complete 3d tool package ...
:Blender software is also very powerful for industrial use../

$:But Blender can be used even with 2 GB of memory capacity and runs on lesser hardware.

$:But maya requires very high hardware
Also high memory capacity is required.

Maya is garbage at best. Its outdated, and buggy as hell. I'm moving to Blender. I have more faith in its path in the future than Maya! I can't ever see moving to subscription after my edu plan runs out. What they want per month is absolutely idiotic for software that forces me to reboot multiple times a day. I have never used software that crashes or bugs out 100 times and FOR 100 DIFFERENT REASONS!

Maya hands down for animation, but I'm also impressed with a lot of the stuff Blender users have been doing in recent years. Speaking directly as an animation director though I've come across plenty of shitty demo reels and I'd rather train someone up on software than train them to be a decent animator, so if you can cut your teeth animating on free software do it. It's such a drain on production to have to send something back for revision after revision after revision versus having someone who needs a few weeks or two to ramp up on the basics of a program but can nail the assignment on pretty much the 1st or 2nd try because they have an eye for animation. Specialization is a real thing, I've been using Maya since 1999 and I still really only know a fraction of it, poly modeling, making shaders, creating sets, clusters, joints, skinning, set driven keys, that's about it, and I can make a film with that. I use 3D-Coat for modeling, UV mapping (it's all automated now,) and texturing. I've used all sorts of shitty but free animation programs for 2D animation and it's frustrating as hell, you're not always going to work for someone willing to pay Autodesk's outrageous prices so your expertise in any one program can get nerfed just like that, but one thing that can't get pulled out from under you is basic skills - having an eye for good edgeflow, good timing, arcs, poses, weight, etc. You might struggle at first with the program's weird pan/zoom/tumble setup, or modifier stack or node editor and how that all works, but every animation program at the end of the day has a set key button somewhere, some kind of skin bind/weighting system, and joints are joints, just a pivot point and rotation information, at least you'll know what it SHOULD look like while you're struggling to orient yourself with the program, people who can't do that don't last long at my company.

Yaw guys I will tell you this from my 2 years of experience.. Maya has some technical flaws that needs some serious fixing:-
-Maya crashes so unexpectedly and often when in the middle of doing your project.
-Maya sometimes has missing tools in their UI particularly Xgen, and every time you need to always go through their program files and script files to fix it which could really be complicated.
-Maya does not fully utilize your hardware resources which is only the Processor(CPU) and RAM.
-Maya doesn't work very well with its external plugins unlike its brother 3DS Max which works great with Plugins which has much more plugins compatible with Max

Hard to learn is Houdini. Maya is easy, I don't like blender, but it's because I'm already very comfortable in Maya, besides, blender has nothing that really is a quality leap, as it can be from Maya to Houdini.

Maya's not easy to learn. Consider the sheer number of node types and tools. And take a look at the API-- MEL is a really unusual language that doesn't follow the conventions you expect from any other language.
