But many people don't understand that a fast storage needs a fast CPU + fast GPU + fast RAM.

Seven bends on a ribbon cable on industrial components was quite normal here.

Thanks for the explanation. When I purchased my NVME upgrade for my Synology NAS it was recommended but I wasn't really sure why. I guessed that it had something to do with speed.

Pre-2016 M.2 was usually SATA, indeed. In 2015, NVMe, if it was out, was a luxury item, sort of like getting a 'Titan, LOL.

Worked in computer sales starting at Radio Shack in 1979 in my senior year of college. Essentially, we flew by the seat of our pants. Around 1982 or 83, we transitioned painstakingly from large floppy disks to hard drive storage. The first purchase for our store, was a five MB hard disk it cost something like $8000. Let me spell that MEGABYTES. Our demo model was also the base of our franchise accounting system. Three stations running SCO unix. I think memory was also HUGE, at eight KILOBYTES, one MILLION TIMES SMALLER than my average laptop. We had connections to bulletin boards runnng at 300 bits per second, up from 110. (Compare that to 300 to 360 MILLION bits per second on my cable modem today. Tomorrow, I will be troubleshooting a system used to remotely monitor hotel air conditioning systems by their maintenance contractor. (Needs a new four dollar CMOS battery.) I’m relieved to live in a modern world, where components are no longer proprietary. Enjoy your blessings!

There are different sizes for nvme m.2 hard drives like 2280 2260 2230. I was wondering other than measuring is there a way to tell what size you have on without opening up the computer.

Funny, I was just speaking with my wife the other day how we're no longer worrying about the pins for PRIMARY/SECONDARY MASTER/SLAVE when we connect hard drives with SATA now. Easier to route the thinner cables too compared to IDE.

Holy Cow, this is an incredibly great video. I have found this M.2 vs NVME very confusing, but you have done a brilliantly clear job of explaining it. I used to build computers with PATA, etc. but lately only buy used HP Z workstation for myself and my clients. Getting older ones without mboard M.2 NVME sockets equipped with an adapter so they boot the OS can be a headache because of adapter compatibility. As for gaming, I used to setup DOOM Novell networked for 3 computers on my home office, I wonder if that's what you were referring to. PS I like your gas range and exhaust system too! Thanks a lot.

Watching this out of curiosity in 2023, made me laugh when you got to Optane and said "there's nothing to talk about" seeing they killed it off within the last year

I just ordered a new 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD after checking everything, and just realized I forgot to double-check the pin arrangement on the actual motherboard! But thanks to your video, I now know that I got the exact right drive.

The retailer/assembler put a regular SATA drive in the SATA3_1 slot, so I’ve been using the slowest storage speed my PC can offer… and with only 250 GB of storage.
Now I’ll be getting ten times the speed for ten times the capacity! The new drive wasn’t expensive, either. Now I just need to check that BIOS setting when it arrives, and I’ll be good to go.

It’s always good to check this stuff so you don’t miss out on things you already partially paid for :D

Man fast forward to 2023, and Intel Optane Tech was so needlessly expensive and proprietary that they buried the tech by 2019. Such an awesome optimization engine burdened by the fact you needed "Intel Optane" brand drives that were $615 for 512gb. (at the time) Nobody cared about the speed increase when you couldn't visibly tell the difference from drives that cost $150 less. (again, at the time)

LOL Air flow yes it was hard to get good air flow with the Floppy ribbon cable and HHD plus when we got a CD rom lol it was so much better going to SATA nice thin cables but now with my new build all the Storage is on the motherboard with 4 MVMe Gen 4 SSD putting 2 x 1 TB and 2X 2 TB this should be enough.
Thanks for the video as I never knew that there was a difference between M.2 and MvMe M.2 and now PCI-e 5 is out ish 1000BM/s read and write they say .
things have come a long way from the 420MB HHD in my first Pc and 4BM Ram 😄
