Gamble being sentimental cost him the money and the life. It is not professional and he paid for it.

The irony of this scene is that if Gamble and TJ had been full-on, no remorse criminals and killed Boxer and Street (Or at least knocked Street out cold), TJ could've played along with Hondo for a little while longer, giving the team more time to get away with Frenchie boy.

They likely would've gotten away with it.
