I did the EGR, intercooler, and ECU programming on my 2002 Jetta TDI. I now have 348,000 miles on that car and have had few engine problems.

I have a 2010 Focus 1.6 TDCI which keeps losing torque through the gears but as soon as I stop and restart the enging the problem goes away for a few miles and then comes back after several miles. I had the EGR and fuel filter replaced 2 months ago and it cured the problem about 80% but this last 2 weeks it's come back as bad as ever. I know of 2 people who had the EGR software deleted and this cured their problem, they said the engine ran better and the emissions passed the MOTs. My EGR is still under warranty so am taking it back to the garage shortly and will ask him about the option of deleting the software if it happens again.

I use mid grade gasoline on my 2007 Honda Civic EX, or 90%. In seven years of owning this car, my egr valve was clean. It’s the original EGR valve.I also use mmo on my gas tank..” as directed”. Since I got the car.

Little known fact about egr. Its used to lower cylinder temps, by adding low to no oxygen air in the combustion chamber it enables higher boost with lower fuel consumption. If you remove egr, you need to add more fuel to reduce cylinder temps and prevent knock. That's why they sometimes add egr coolers. Its a complicated balance to make more power and keep the fuel consumption low

They should also outlaw they lightning, because it also produces massive amounts of NOx !
The lobbied government insanity that people allow to happen and be reinforced is unimaginable! All in the name of more money into the pockets of big company owners! The same ones who lobby the government!!

...mainly i'm working on "big" diesel engines (5.9 to 25 lit). All are euro3 to euro4b (corresponds to euro6 in car). Egr is very important for your fuel economy, especially on engines used in variable rpms. Basically you can explain egr as variable working volume of your cylinders. It makes possible to add less fuel to mixture and lower torque and power without:
decrise of rpms,
loos of stihiometric ratio fuel to oxygen
exiting zone of best fuel utilisation.
I strongly oppose removal of egr.
Main issues i incounterd were:
Clogging of egr cooler(s)
-cold engine usage
-bad injectors (leaks or bad atomization)
-bad turbo or MAF sensor
-clogged crank case ventilation filter/condenser on closed systems
Cracked egr cooler (high presence of vapour in crank ventilation line nearest to head cover and water in oil presence)
-sudden shut downs of warm engine
-shut downs during dpf regeneration
Bad egr valve position reading
-worn (consumed) actuation surface due to fluctuation of force applied during operation
All investments in repairs will be shortly reimbursed on consumption side.
If you have any questions about this plese feel free to ask...
I'm using vw 2.0 tdi 140hp on caddy for ½ million kilometers, and i replaced egr (incl. cooler) on 360.000 km. due to leak of ex. gas on housing (worn seals on shaft)

Half the problem is the terrible placement of the egr and the work involved to clean or replace, especially on 1.6 tdi.

Hi, I have a 2009 vw passat estate B6 and am thinking of removing the egr valve, as the engine is definitely down on power. I have watched numerous videos on how to do this, but none have mentioned the air flow sensor connected to the valve. If I delete the egr, I'm guessing I could get engine warning lights on the dash? Will this need a ecu remap? (As I've seen mentioned before), or will a service reset clear this? Any help from anyone would be great!

What about temperatures?
Inert gases deaccelerate chemical reactions, have greater specific heat capacity (J/kgK), in other words have cooling effect on every part inside the cyl.
Tolerances, injection (pre-inection, time, quantity), components, maps etc., were designed to operate with EGR – at least 50% of time?!
When EGR is deleted, the temperatures are changed, combustion condionitones are changed, and the ECU still drives the engine not taking into account aforementioned?
Is it mandatory for engine life to buy a map which is completly adjusted, tested, to drive the engine without ERG?
Can anyone please share your toughts!

I am the lucky owner of a Vauxhall Antara 2.0 and was very sluggish due to a mechanic who put the cam belt on 2 teeth in the wrong direction, after new valves, cam shaft etc etc I decided to blank off the EGR vale and while the icu was being vamped up by 40 HP had the management light code taken off as well. The car goes like a rocket now and less fuel, if it blows up it's only an Antara so no big loss there.

Here is a question that I haven’t seen answered anywhere. Does a stage 1 or ECU remap increase, decrease or make no difference to how quickly an EGR valve will clog up?

EGR valves are put on because the government forced manufacturers through lawll to put it on not because the manufacturers wanted it. I remove mine and Michael runs a lot lot better.

I really enjoy the knowledge you share with us.. Recently, i’ve had a remap on c200 kompressor 2009 model petrol 1.8L @stock: 181 hp 250nm torque.. after getting stage 1 : 221 hp 330nm torque.. Its just done three days ago. but i didn’t feel any difference.. the tuner claimed 4 degrees ignition advance, new k&N filter installed.. He saying that my car is losing power bcz of it has no resonator and no muffler.. he added, These types of car needs back pressure.. Please help me to find out what could be the reason.. the health of the engine is very good he said.. Would you like to share with me your opinion on this please. Thanks 😊 for reading a long comment 😅 I appreciate your help ❤

I still have the EGR but it's been switched off with a tune. Is there something else I should do? I assume that's an effective solution. I do understand it won't prevent build up at the EGR valve. But it should help prevent some build up on the intake and valves. Is that correct?

Back in the 90s I removed an EGR or 2. Back then I can't say for sure I knew what it's purpose was, I just knew I didn't want exhaust gas in my combustion chamber. But I guess somehow it actually lowers combustion temps? Still seems pointless to me but if it's not broken...
