I use an iPad Mini 6 with an MBA M2 13. It works great! I prop up the MBA with a Moft stand whilst using an external keyboard and mouse, so I can lay the iPad Mini directly on the keyboard. It works great for secondary stuff that I just need to glance at from time to time.
Like you initially, I just used SIdecar wirelessly, and it was wony at best. Wired definitely works better, but I wonder if this will lead to overcharging issues with the iPad, along with draining the battery of the Macbook.
To change the resolution of the iPad, an app called "Maestro" does the trick! Otherwise, the font is too small, and cannot be adjusted natively.
I have a 1080p monitor together with an iPad Pro 12.9" at home with my MacBook Pro. But the resolution mismatch is really an issue. iPad Pro works better with the resolution actually.
I have a 4K 17" portable monitor when I work outside. It performs much better than a 1080p Dell portable monitor I think. Although I will adjust the resolution to 2K for better reading size.
I have a 24" 4K monitor in office but I will adjust the resolution to 2K also for better reading size.
In conclusion, 1080p is not really enough for reading. 2K is the best resolution for me to read. Sidecar of iPad is really a value-added to my iPad Pro.
Excellent video!
ОтветитьThis video is exactly what i was looking for
ОтветитьI think I'd like to try an iPad with sidecar with my teleprompter so that I have better eye contact with the audience when teaching over Zoom. Has anyone tried that?
ОтветитьI really like the idea of sidecar, but you can’t use the touch display. Everything has to be done through the mouse still. I’m really hoping Apple starts merging their operating systems between iPadOS and MacOS. For now I have an espresso 17 pro display that has the touchscreen feature for software that I like to use.
ОтветитьI have a 15" portable USB-C monitor I paid ~$110 and a new 10th Gen regular iPad. I find they both complement a 13" M1 Macbook Air, the 15" for road trips, and the iPad for air/cruise ship trips. If I could only choose one, the iPad is overall more versatile, but with usb-c monitors being so inexpensive, if you have the need, get both.
ОтветитьYou can draw on the iPad, using it with the Apple pen. I don’t think you can do that with any regular touch screen monitor.
ОтветитьFor me, I’m not a Mac person nor have I heard or used sidecar (now I know). I’m one of those guys that likes to annotate when it comes to zoom, keynote or PowerPoint. So, in some cases the iPad has an advantage as far as wireless goes. But, when it comes to quality, I’d prefer an external monitor.
ОтветитьAfter setting up my new MacBook from my old - I was able to control one with the other and vice versa,, almost like sidecar but they still acted as separate devices so you couldn’t pull windows from one to the other.. I wonder why I have never heard of this. It means I can use a MacBook next to an iMac, control the iMac with the trackpad and keyboard of the MacBook and run the labour intensive tasks there, while using the separate ram and processing power on the MacBook to do all writing / browsing / notes on the side… (which effectively means I wish I hadn’t purchased a fully spec MacBook Pro but instead a baseline MacBook Air + an iMac 😅)
Ответитьbros got a calculator app on the ipad o.o
ОтветитьCan you use an iPad as the only display for a Mac Studio? Not a secondary. Thanks
ОтветитьDid you have TrueTone on while measuring the iPad's display gamut?
ОтветитьSomething annoying is that a ton of streaming services won’t play video when sidecar is enabled, wireless or wired. my guess is for anti piracy??
ОтветитьYou forgot the most important thing. The Ipad has it's own battery, so using it will not hurt your battery life on the go at all, whereas the Dell screen can only be used with an outlet (or I am not sure maybe charged by your laptop but that will drain it pretty quickly.)
Ответитьfew years ago when i was a student at the uni i got myself a second portable screen for some productivity on the go, now that i am working from home and have transitioned into desktop pc my portable screen is kinda gathering dust, the problem is it only has a type-c for both power delivery and video signal, and my gpu doesn't have a type-c out, i tried looking online for solutions but can't quite figure it out, was wondering if there is a way to breath new life into this now old screen of mine, the model number is AOC i1601Fwux
ОтветитьConclution dell specs are cheap
ОтветитьiPad Pro Should be a 120hz screen were as the dell is 60 hz.
ОтветитьSidecar couldn't do vertical display
ОтветитьI don’t know why I have never use the Apple Pencil while using sidecar 🤯
ОтветитьI use often my 12.9 inch iPad Pro as a second Display with cable and with ThirdParty Apps like Easyres or something like this I can use resolutions up to 3180x2384!!! and I think maybe that is the real resolution of the iPad and not 2732x2048 or why I can use resolutions higher than this...
ОтветитьThe Dell’s case is plastic, and over $300???… 😂😂😂🤦♂️ I hope its price has dropped significantly, since this was posted.
ОтветитьYou know if Apple wasn‘t being a dick they could include target display mode in every iPad Pro via USB-C. This way every laptop could use ‚sidecar‘ and it would do so with no latency and without compression.
ОтветитьNice overview and comparison. FYI, you had the iPad Pro 12.9 on the screen when you said they both have 60Hz panels.
ОтветитьUsed to have a iPad running Duet Display wired about 10 years ago, worked perfectly and will run on a 20,- second hand iPad 2
ОтветитьBought a 1440p 14" display for only $60,-
Ответитьyes! i was too oblivious. was searching for this for more than a year. it was so making sense, but every google search leads me to wireless sidecar. i have been gave up using the unstable wireless and the ipad has been a sitting brick. so thank you so much for this video!
ОтветитьDoes Ipad with sidecar work with windows ?
ОтветитьWhen connected via usb can you use the internet hotspot on the iPad if you need internet access say at a library?
ОтветитьMan, that dell display looks like my surface laptop studio 2 as far as response time goes, not quite as bad though lol... There's a reason I'm looking at other laptop solutions/ipads now.
ОтветитьThe iPad is more than twice as expensive as the typical portable monitor. The iPad Pro, with the 12.9 inch screen, is in another price category altogether. It is not even close.
ОтветитьI was specifically looking at this video to see if you noticed the fan running more or less with the monitor. When I use my iPad and sidecar with my MacBook Air, the fan kicks up. I have a separate large monitor that doesn’t cause my MacBook Air fan to come on. It goes against my thinking that the apple device (iPad) would cause a heating issue with another apple device (MBA) vs. hooking up a cheap 20’’ monitor.
ОтветитьIs there any way to share a screen between two ipads without USB and using two different wifi from distance?
ОтветитьAnd then there is the advantage of universal control with the iPad. Do iPad stuff with your Mac keyboard and trackpad that can’t be done with anything else. Next level stuff that just works
ОтветитьPlease show options for Bootcamp and os x for portable displays above 60hz! Please
ОтветитьPortable display? For what?
Useless stuff, on my opinion. 😂
Hi, just wanted to add, that the iPad also supports universal control. In addition to that you should take a look at the reference mode on the 12.9 inch iPad for a better more colour accurate experience.
ОтветитьThe iPad Pro has a 120hz panel, not a 60hz. I think Sidecar is limited to 60hz, but that's got nothing to do with the panel. The iPad Pro should also be very colour accurate, but again, it may not be colour accurate within Sidecar because of the way it compresses video. I don't think you made any distinction about the iPad Pro's actual specs, and Sidecar's limitations, which is disappointing.
ОтветитьI bought a used 2nd gen iPad Pro 2 years ago just to fill out documents and the ease of pulling up notes/files on my mac. Sidecar being added a few months later was a huge bonus and now I use it everyday for work to have slack off to the side
ОтветитьWired sidecar disconnects every few seconds and wireless is worse. Can’t initiate it from iPad which is stupid and only this way so you can’t use it to revive a broken MacBook. Fuck apple.
ОтветитьHi can you pls share how you extend the Macbook display to DELL I have Samsung tab and I feel like I just wasted money I couldn’t use it as a secondary screen
Ответитьuseful video, thanks for you sharing,it's help a lot
ОтветитьThanks for this video. I'm like you; I have a studio display and dislike having to move my head to the side to see another display. I have a nice gap on my desk, in front of the monitor, where a 2nd display would work well. Leaning towards the iPad so far.
Ответитьwas shopping for a travel monitor and was looking for recommendations. When using Sidecar, it is somewhat glitchy moving documents around but will try it wired. the only thing i like about some of the travel option screens is that there is a holder that expands your laptop. (looking for a screen that doesn't need a stand, think sitting on a plane or train, do you know of any options to attach my IPAD to my macbook pro?
ОтветитьI have serious issues with connecting the iPad via cable. Wifi connects but I have to deal with occasional drop out.
I may have to be going to a portable monitor route.
Having the iPad pro 12.9, disappointed overall. •Bad connection issues. Disconnection. Freezing. Better now in Ventura 13.4, but still gets disconnected every 3 hours or so. •Often glitches and stutter of mouse cursor. •Not as responsive as my old Dell P2415Q 4k monitor (which has relatively slow 60Hz refresh and 8 ms response). Much less responsive than Macbook screen (ProMotion). •With color images, including Apple's own colored desktops: Grainy JPEG like squares from compression, even when connected through usb-C cable. Might be a cable issue, will try USB 3.2 soon. •No color calibration through System Preferences •No ability to change into portrait mode, only landscape. (C'mon Apple!) •Touchscreen only works with apple pencil. • Apple pencil responsiveness is slow. Cursor lags behind pencil. •Good: Brighter screen than the 16" M1 Macbook Pro. •Colors seem bright. • Whites look better than Macbook Pro default profile—a bit less red and green.
