I recently walked into a music shop intent on buying another strat. Thought I’d play a 335 just for “comparison”. iv always loved the sound and look of them but figured they were way out of my budget.
After one touch to the neck I new this was going to be an expensive visit to the music shop. It was love at first note for my vintage burst satin finish 335.

OMG Pete! Such tasty demo stuff when doing the comparison. Beautiful playing on these phenomenal guitars! LOVE the 335’s.

Could buy a Gibson, but if a Sire is good enough for mr 335, Larry Carlton its good enough for most people and at least 3k cheaper, regardless of brand, find the one that works for you, very versatile guitar, but a Tele with a P90 in neck is my most versatile guitar.

I’ve never met a semi hollow that I could get along with. 335 or 339. I’m an SG/LP guy myself. Maybe in the future. 😊

Shout out to the ‘64. Got mine a year ago, my first semi-hollow. I couldn’t try out all 3 models for various reasons so I had to rely on video reviews that all sounded mediocre thru a tablet. I got the sense that the ‘64 had controllable bite if you need it and still have all the warmth. To my ears, the ‘59 had a bit more of the lower frequencies while the ‘61 sounded brighter. I did notice the nylon saddles on the ‘64 but didn’t give it much thought. I still haven’t personally played the other 2 models but I don’t regret picking the ‘64. The unwieldy (for the slight) body size gives me pause but the tones are worth it. Thankfully the ‘64 neck profile suits me well so it softens this misgiving.

I've never understood exactly if the ES-335 (and similar models) as well as being iconic is the most versatile guitar, but it certainly has its own great personality and simply wonderful features... I have one that I use to record my songs and for some sounds it's really ideal.

Love it when the Captain does his killer, soulful old school lead guitar solos. Unlike the mechanical sound of most latter day players, he always sounds fresh, soulful and satisfying, playing just the right notes with just the right phrasing, never over or underplaying. That takes REAL talent, and so as a result and unlike many other players on his show, he never has to show off. Once he starts playing you hear REAL blues rock sound, the kind that takes real hippies and the young ones as well, back to the 'daze' when human beings were actually in love with each other, and everyone knows it and can sense it in Lee's playing. You can almost see the black light posters and smell the pot and incense burning, when he plays. I wish he'd play more often.

Why not produce just custom shop guitars. Price could come down and everyone could own a decent guitar.

The biggest issue with 335s is most of them aren’t good, I’ve played probably a couple thousand of them and only a few have that mojo… what really sucks is I can’t afford the few I’ve found that slam 😩 Someone please donate $70,000 so I can be happy 😊….

But I’ve got a Godin LGX with the acoustic bridge pickup and that is scary versatile!!

To my ears the 64 red sounded the best. As far as looks it doesn’t really matter when you actually start testing and playing to check out what they have to offer sound wise. Once you figure out what you like there; it then becomes looking at appearances and what you could live with. After that it’s a question of the price and what your willing to spend.
