I take a Beta Blocker as a precaution because my family has Long Qt Intervals. Mine has always been borderline and I am low risk. Last month I bought an ice cold drink and guzzled it too fast and it gave me a brain freeze but it also gave me a sudden mild arrythmia. I have had these before andmy electrophysiologist who checks me for Long QT says these episodes are likely benign PSVTs as I dont get them often and they are easily reduced by me doing a vagal maneuver (holding my breath, making internal pressure, splashing cold water n my face). My heart usually never goes up above about 108 and often stays in the 90s when these rare episodes occur. On the day I had that brain freeze my heart rate went u to 96 and I did a vagal maneuver and it went down to 83. Then I splashed cold water on my face and it went don to 76. THen it settled back down to it's normal resting heart rate of 50 to 57 where it always has been. Since that day though, I feel my heart beating like never before. My heart rate is normal but it might go up to 66 then back down to 55 and back up again. Is this what Afib is like? My heart rate is in its normal range and I feel fine when exercising. My pulse feels pretty normal but I may have a few beats here and there that are closer in sequence to each other than the rest.

I'm comparing this to my ecg results I got on my smart watch, considering I've had chest pain and constant palpations, I might have afib. Too bad I can't post pictures of my ecg on here huh?

I am an AFib patient. To put my heart back into a normal sinus rhythm I eat jalapeño peppers.

I have had episodes where my heart climbs up to 245 and above and drops down to 40’s. It is irregular to say the least. Last episode of it caused me to have a cold sweat, difficultly in breathing and slight left shoulder pain. It lasted about seven hours and returned to normal abruptly just as it started abruptly. To date I have not captured it on an EKG. I now have the device that monitor’s EKG from home. I can then send a copy of it via my phone in a pdf file. Thank God for such wonderful technologies they have today.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia.
In a healthy heart, SA node initiates all electrical impulses in the atria.
In AF, electrical impulses are initiated randomly from many other sites called ectopic sites, in and around the atria, commonly near the roots of pulmonary veins.
These un-synchronized, chaotic electrical signals cause the atria to quiver or fibrillate rather than contract.
Although the atrial rate during atrial fibrillation can be extremely high. Most of the electrical impulses do not pass through the AV node to ventricles. This is due to refractory properties of the cells of the AV node. Those. that do come through are irregular. Heart rate is therefore irregular and can range from slow- less than 60- to rapid - more than 100.

On ECG, AF is characterized by:
- absence of P waves
- irregular narrow QRS complexes

Reminder: P wave represents electrical activity of the SA node that is now obscured by activities of multiple ectopic sites.

- The baseline on ECG may appear undulating or totally flat depending on the number of ectopic sited in the atria.
In general, larger number of ectopic site results in flatter baseline.

As the atria do not function properly the heart puts out less blood, and heart failure may occur. The most common complication of AF, however, is the formation of clot in the atria.
As the atria do not empty completely into the ventricles, the blood may stagnate inside the atria and blood clots may form. These clots may then pass into the bloodstream, get stuck in small arteries and block them. When a blood clot block artery in the brain, a stroke may be result.
