I heard this coming out of Hartford connecticut on the northbound Amtrak train. The Saturday after thanksgiving. It was cold wet and rainy so I sat back in seat put my coat. ITT was cold in the car and started singing it. After that I just drifted off to sleep

In Dec of 1969, when this song was released, I was 21, in basic training at Ft Benning Ga. I remember serving guard duty one night as a pickup truck driver for the Officer in charge of the guard. It was a rainy night in Ga, while I was driving back from making a delivery run, and this song came on the radio in the truck. I knew Vietnam was in my near future, and it felt like it was raining all over the world.

Back in 1991 I was an old graduate student in my early 30's after years of corporate world, sitting at a table in the campus pub where the local band would play from time to time. I was sipping my beer home sick. The nostalgic mood of this song got the better of me, so I made a request to the band. When they heard my request, however, they seemed rather uneasy and even displeased. It was in Colorado and although I never thought it would be a big deal enough to rub them in the wrong way, somehow it did. Awkward moments lasted like an eternity all through the band's play. Apparently, in crisp-climate Colorado people are hardly exposed to balmy rainy night pathos of Georgia! It was never the case with me, but sometimes it takes some people experience of actual immersion in certain aspects of life to be able to savor certain emotions & moods.... I wasn't even from Georgia.

Rain falling a chill in my bones and missing a warm embrace from her but yet some how Ive got to get through. May I find peace through my heart ache God help me.
