I just usually test a wide range of sticks when I’m ready for a switch (which is like every 5+ years) and whatever feels right, gets my credit card. I don’t care if they are small ATP Federer sticks (they aren’t, because those Wilson’s of his are absolute 2x4’s), or gigantic trampolines.

That is not what people are going to want to hear. But it is definitely spot on. I learned my lesson when I started road cycling. Started with a cheap road bike and then after a couple years I went the expensive route.

That was when I realized It was me who needed an upgrade and not the gear, took a couple years before I had admitted it to myself/ had the realization.

Your forehands better with the pan. Forces you to move your feet and be prepared earlier.

Nice vid.
Thanks.

With shorter paddle, it’s actually easier to control the ball - think table tennis.

My tennis coach used to say, “the man makes the racquet not the other way around. The racquet is merely a tool to do the work. You can have the best tool but if you don’t have the proper technique. You will not use it to its highest potential.”

After re-watching this many times I noticed most of my 3.5 doubles group, who play far more consistently than myself, mostly use light, oversize racquets, like you might find pre-strung in a sporting goods store. So, I tried one. It was 107 inches, about 10.5 ounces, easy to keep the ball deep in the court with a swingspeed I could control. My unforced errors dropped way off and my winning percentage went up. If you are a recreational or sometimes lower league (3.5) player, like me, you are probably not in peak fitness nor do your have a set practice and training routine. A racquet suited to your actual level, not the one you wish to be or hope to grow into without changing anything, will allow you to play better tennis. I sold all my well reviewed "players sticks" and bought a light 100 inch racquet, not as powerful as the 107, but easy to play with and rated for an adult beginner all the way up. So, Ian , please do a video, when your ankle is fully recovered, and let people see the high level of tennis you can play with an off the shelf tweener type frame. Thanks, Speedy and Full Recovery, and please keep these useful videos coming! Loved the Rating Video, the mention of the stuck on offense Trolls on the forums reminded me of the equipment side of the "it's not me it's them" troll mindset from which I'm recovering.

I think an interesting question would be, rather than the gear that makes you play better... Is there gear that helps you improve faster?

I think it could, like using a racquet that gives little power could, in principle, help you develop generating your own... But we'd have to test it

Not a joke. We were short a racquet one time and I took my Guitar Hero Guitar to the court and won with it handily!

I was using so many 🎸 /tennis puns too!

"The ace of spades!" I sang on an ace

"I beat you solo"

Etc

I play at a neighborhood club with a group of about 60 regular players. The best player at our club uses a 25-year-old Prince racquet. It wasn't even a top-of-the-line Prince when he got it, but just a cheaper, mid-level racquet. Doesn't matter, his game is so smooth. I couldn't beat him if he was playing with a wooden racquet. A few years ago I replaced my 15-year-old Dunlop with some fancy, expensive Babolat Pure Aero. The Babolat gave me a bit more power but less control, and it gave me elbow problem to boot. I've switched back to the old Dunlops and gave the Babolats to my son. I believe racquets are overrated, as long as you have something decent, but I have friends who seem to buy new ones every 6 months. BTW, legend has it golf legend Lee Trevino used to win bets beating people playing with a Coke bottle.

Glad someone said it. I always notice the people with the most expensive rackets and gear seem to often be lower level players. I have also seen many 3.0 - 3.5 players complain more about the net height and other random conditions than the good ones. Most important thing is to take ownership of the result and see what you can do better and what you didn't do well.

Ha very good.
I played a guy a couple of years ago who used an old wooden racket, I reckon he’d play so much better with new equipment, which he did own, but he said he enjoys the feel & playing with the older rackets. I won 6-0 or 6-1 can’t remember now, but I enjoy the feel of winning😂

If you are avarage player or junior I agree with you they should not look for excuses because of racquet or strings, there are much more important things. But if you are pro it's all about small details.
