Unsure about the new Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch

As a space nerd I am about to get this watch, but I was worried if making the "wrong" choice. You know - acrylic might come handy if I need to go to space with my non existing shuttle... You never know, you know. On the other hand the practicality of Sapphire is hard to ignore. Safe to say, your video pushed me in to the sapphire zone. Sadly, it means like you I will most likely be disqualified from boarding a space shuttle.

Keeping the chronograph ON all the time will reduce significantly the power reserve. The second hand is the one on the left side sub-dial. The one that looks like the second hand on a 3-hand watch is the chronograph hand.

I have been really trying to love this watch but can't get past the manual wind part, no-one seems to mention that it's not an automatic watch. I appreciate the quality, history, design, proportion etc of this watch but it's not really my style. It looks like it should be worn by an engineer who wears khakis and drives an Audi

I think with the METAS certification the water resistance is higher than 50 meters – but Omega wants to be close to the original and therefore still defines it as 50 meters

They've really made the Aqua-Terra look look like crap now, but there's something just off about the way they do ever re-release of the classics too, starting with the ugly faux platina, burnt lume. So it really comes down to this one, and I love the bracelet and the pattern on the clasp, but then they cheap out with no micro-adjustments, that's like broadcasting that they're really not a professional watch brand and so what if you don't like it or us.

As a Purdue grad, this is my grail watch because my fellow alumnus wore it to the moon even though he left it with Aldrin before he stepped on the moon itself.

Applied indices and 100m WR and for me it would be perfect!

I just got my SS on bracelet on 10.7.23 and I am very pleased with it. I have wanted a "Moonwatch" since the 70's and it looks like my timing is excellent. The 3861 with all its technical / mechanical advancements is amazing. The new 5 link melt on your wrist bracelet with the recently introduced on the fly micro length adjustment. The new stepped dial, lume, domed hands, dot over 90, etc... is close to perfection. I chose the SS because of the durability and the open case back. I love to look at the movement. I am very pleased. It set me back USD 8,000 and is a tremendous value. Oh, yeah did I say it is beautiful. A classy, humble beautiful.

Kind of found out about this channel a little bit late into my watch obsession and your very unusual style (for a USA’er) heavily sprinkled with sarcasm really resonates with me. Quickly becoming a fan, please don’t sell out.

The connection to the "moon landing" makes me like this watch LESS. There's ZERO chance we landed on the moon in 1969. I can't even get cell phone service in 2023 at the lake house. C'mon. Might buy the sapphire sandwich in a week or two despite this... We shall see.

I don’t care if it’s a normie pick, but the Speedmaster Professional is one of the coolest watches ever, in my opinion. To me it’s as iconic as a Rolex Submariner.

I think you’re being very harsh, ok yeah this exact model didn’t go to the moon but 50% of the parts of the 3861 mov’t is the same as the 1861 and this is just a polished up version of the 861, and the 861 is just an updated version of the original 321 movement made in 1957-68.

Also, Omega has tested the new 3861 using the same tests nasa used on the original moon watch.

The new bracket and clasp is also similar to the earlier ones, you’ll really struggle to find a Watch that’s easily available that’s modern and still has a lot of its original features and using similar movements (from before they became part of swatch, and tbf omegas movement development and technology has really thrived in the last decade ish years).

Yeh they’ve gone on about the moon, but it’s still an epic story, hopefully be my next watch

This isn’t a watch that went to the moon , it is THE WATCH that went to the moon. Love it or hate it, it is a legend and a must have for all collections.

Great review! I still bought one and am currently wearing it. As far as tool watches go, this is one of the only ones that kind of makes sense to me. Water resistance doesn't matter too much since I haven't gone swimming in... a decade. And I probably wouldn't wear a watch if I did swim anyway. Plus this watch is rated for a swim after all. Pro tip: Don't go in the ocean the day after a major storm... Rip currents can be deadly! Therapy helps!

I don’t have any problems with sharp case or hair pulling. And it does have micro adjustment. I am very satisfied with my watch.

I will never own a watch with male genitalia at 12. It’s subliminal and the people who do buy this piece are actually closet homosexual, whether they realise it or not.

It’s ergonomically garbage. Manual winding of a watch with the crown buried in the case gets real old real quick. I appreciate it, but I’d appreciate an auto rotor and solid caseback plus 100m of water resistance even more.

I’ve always dismissed the Speedy 42 assuming it would be too large on my 7” wrist and I don’t like the 38mm so I was amazed when I tried this yesterday. Looked absolutely spot on size wise and that bracelet is next level of comfort. Love it!

This is a pretty good review. I ended up going to a local AD and saw this side-by-side against the Seamaster, I was left unimpressed. It just has a plain design that doesn't work for me. When the light hits the watch, you can see the matte almost gray finish, by contrast the Seamaster glows in light.

Agree, I couldn't care less about the moon landing "history". I got this watch (hesalite) because its a new-vintage design with a superb movement. Love the looks, how it wears, and the fact that it comes with a hesalite crystal. I really enjoy this watch, but again, couldn't care less about the moon stuff.

The Speedmaster is a cool watch. Last year I was able to get a new old stock of an 1861 on an alligator. I get a lot of compliments and I have seen the new updated one, but just something about the discontinued version I like more. And that hesalite although it scratches easily looks so clear and I love that alligator gives the watch a classic look.

I’ve recently acquired the Speedy Pro with the cal. 1861 from my bro in law who needed to make room for his collection. The speedy pro was in the chopping block but I grabbed the opportunity to buy it. It’s a 2018 Big Box with all the goodies. It was priced fairly well. He included the new bracelet as well which made the wearing experience on my 6.25” feel incredible. It’s so good that it took the wrist time away from my Explorer 124270. It’s an incredible watch and i love looking at the dial.

'Just enough bling' on the bracelet is the perfect way to put it. The bracelet on the hesalite version is just missing a little something. Damn it's a really hard choice though between the sapphire and hesalite.
