DON'T Buy / Mod a SEIKO SKX007 in 2022 - SUPERCHARGED SKX Mod Build

With prices for a new SKX007J being well over $1,000 I think I’ll hold off on the modding. It’s crazy but the SKX007 series watches might be the new Cpt Willard.

You will be able to buy a new old stock skx for a few thousand in a few years... if you can find one. Nothing that came out on the market from Seiko in recent years (5kx line, Turtle, Prospex) or other models are like skx..whatever some say. It is already considered vintage since it is from 1996, but they are also rare because no one really sells the SKX007 anymore, being very collectable. It will be quite difficult to catch an unmodified skx. I personally just bought 3 new old stock from an individual who had 6 skx007, brand new, $240 each. When I called to get more... they were already sold..



My first watch was a modified SKX009K. Sadly, I have to sell it at that time. Bought a good conditioned 2nd hand back in 2020. But decided to modify it. Looked for ways on how to. Landed on your channel.

And huuuge thanks to you I was able to have a modified watch which suits my preference. From then on modded my own watches after buying the parts. Such good times. Now, I try to maintain the stock look of the watch with the crystal or bezel being the modified parts. It's true, SKX prices have gone up to crazy prices. Wished I didn't sell my mint skx007J, 171 and SKX173 Malaysia variant. Nearest thing to the SKX that i have is the Seiko 5KX Stealth which I absolutely adore.

Might replace the mineral glass to Sapphire since I still have left over stock when the itch to modify comes again. Anyway, I might have already overshared but truly it is sad to see seiko prices going up.

IMPORTANT: I have a SPB185 SPB187 case no movement. Would the NH-34 GMT fit in this case? I am learning from you.

I would love to see you build a Batman blue/black bezel with 4N34 GMT and jubilee. Being very old I need the magnifier on the dial to enlarge the date. Never seen any one glue one.

That’s the most legit hand press tool I’ve ever seen. I’m living in the Stone Age over here by comparison.

Nice, great advice. I have my eyes on an auction for a damaged SKX007 but watching this, seems i would only end up using the case. So this has been a massive help for me.

but lumes are brighter on original seiko.

All of that is fake seiko.. I am for the all original all stock parts.. if you replace just 1 part of it for an aftermarket or an oem then it is now a frankenstein watch.. I go seiko service center if I want to service my seiko watch..

What dial did you use that has the raised markers? Wasn’t sure if it was oem or not

Good points, but an unmodded or even lightly modded SKX will still always be worth much more than essentially a fake knock off SKX. Apples amd oranges. I’m just happy I got several SKX’s in my collection before they were discontinued! And I don’t really care much about hacking, I value the screw down crown higher.

Invicta 1953 is the new cheap platform: Sub $100, NH35 movement, same crystal diameter as the SKX; BUT, not the standard 28.5mm dial size. No tacky INVICTA engraved on the case, finally.

After doing the diver watch thing for several years, I've come to a conclusion: Either buy a watch and accept it as is, or go full custom to get what you want. There always will be some compromise on the stock watch unless you buy very expensive. I can see adding a strap, or lumed bezel insert, but that's it. Otherwise you end up with an expensive drawer of misfit watches each lacking in some way. Cheaper to have one perfect watch.

What is the bezel you used on the custom version ? Thinking up upgrading, have a skx171 custom already.

I have skx007 from old days and just curious if i can build it with OEM and AM parts. The results is we can build an even upgraded Skx007, the point is buy any watch you want, build any watch you want dont let anyone hold you back for doing what makes you happy.
