Very helpful man. I'm based in Dubai but we're also planning to go to Canada and start a videographer/video editor career. Hopefully :)

I’d love to do video editing but I make 120k a year, it’s going to be hard to take that big of a step back

I truly hate how all these jobs require you to be using adobe software. I'm a Davinci Resolve typa guy 💯

Hi. Professional Film and Video Editor here - been in the TV business (with a couple of feature films to boot) for 25 years. I have been on your journey and to get anywhere you have to be bloody minded, determined and take on jobs you don't like (initially). I am in it because I love it. Saying that - cutting offline documentary for Broadcast on the major channels in the UK my agent pays me around £1500 per week (£2300 $Can) - they charge my clients 15% on top of that. I am freelance - which means my diary constantly has gaps where I don't get paid, but the demand for content is bigger than it has ever been. My advice is to go to film school if you can - but if you can't and you want to edit for TV OR Film - then get your hands on AVID and learn ALL of the shortcuts. Don't copy TV, watch experimental stuff, learn to be creative - embrace your craft.! I love premiere - but the brutal truth is that AVID is seen as the "professional" software and I never see it used outside of creative agencies and corporates. It's a hard path - but it IS a rewarding career IMO. Good luck!

if you consider that Adobe has a subscription depending on what apps you have you can be paying around 200+ $ just for subscriptions. I didnt even mention, music, sounds, images and even plug ins for said programs... yeah LOTS OF EXPENSES. Not a big pay

Those numbers seem accurate for working for a digital marketing firm where you’re a jack of all trades video person, but I can tell you that people who are editing TV spots for established ad agencies, network shows, and docu-series for Netflix are easily making six figures, often getting hired for months at a time with $700+ day rates. In-house corporate positions for Fortune 500 type companies can pay a lot more than the top end of the range that you mentioned at well. Ultimately, you’re right that there is a limit on what people are willing to pay a jack of all trades videographer/editor, but it’s mostly because if they had more, they’d hire an actual agency with editors who only edit and don’t need to do graphics or animation or shoot.
