Hi Hank, the word you were missing towards the end of the video may have been a "commons" as I think this applies to Twitter and other communities in cyberspace.

Sounds like a dying man's insecurities. The online spaces aren't as real as the community you actually live in. I stopped watching you guys cause you let your agreeableness be controlled by narratives you've been beaten to death with "higher" education. Staying on Twitter is copium. Like the junkie who convinces themselves their dealer really does care for them - you all need to go cold turkey.

Might have been already mentioned but using tweet universally was legally problematic, in the same way that calling all facial tissue is. Once a brand name becomes a colloquially used term the company loses their ability to keep a trademark on it. (Legality is also why media organizations call it x)

we have a local store here that is basically the title of the shopping area its in (i.e. wanna hang out at *shop name*) and safeway had bought it and renamed the store to just be another safeway yet no one stopped using the original name ever

The problem here is that a lot of what Hank has said applies almost exclusively to the American population. In Britain, most people will call a tissue a tissue, not a Kleenex. This is in the same way that (unless you’re above 64 years old) you will call a tablet a tablet not an iPad. However, I can think of two seemingly universal examples: the use of Hoover to mean any vacuum cleaner, when it is a brand, and the use of AirPods to refer to in-ear headphones.

This is the same reason I don't change what I call a stadium just because some company buys the naming rights! Also for other reasons: that the naming rights often get re-sold multiple times, which is confusing, and that one company often buys the naming rights to multiple stadiums, sometimes even in the same metro area (e.g. Oracle Arena and Oracle Park in Oakland/SF)

That being said, Twitter is a toxic hellscape and it's time for anyone who cares about democracy and/or their own sanity to quit it for good.

The funny thing is since they changed the name to twitter calling everything tweets isn't even genericization because they have made it clear they are attempting to leave the term.

I think many journalists would actually love to adopt your style guide but are obligated by editors to call it X and then clarify that they actually mean twitter.

Twitter and x is like Pluto. It was renamed, and people don't like it since they were used to the old name, but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter since it still exists no matter if it's a planet or not.

NGL I've been calling Facebook Facebook for a long while after it was Meta, but recently the rebrand has finally stuck and I do call it Meta. Granted arguably Meta had a more clear direction and rebranding effort than Twitter. I.e. They didn't change Facebook to be Meta, they simply changed the name of the company that owns Facebook to Meta, so Oculus is part of Meta, Facebook is part of Meta, and no one is calling (or using) Facebook by the wrong name unlike the Twitter confusion.

Another problem is that X is not a name. Nobody will ever call it X, because it's too unspecific, confusing and nonunique. If Elon renamed Twitter to anything that is capable of being a name, it would still be a problem, but a much smaller one. My two cents.
