The pre order weapons cannot be upgraded so they dont last very long at all, they just about get you through the first hour until you get a weapon you can upgrade.

What a disappointment...

You break it by playing the game normally. That is how demon's souls has always been. You accidentally pick up a weapon or a spell and then you wreck everything.

And then we found out that they can't be upgraded and are almost useless outside of the early game.

It really does make the start of the game unbelievably broken. If you play really well, collecting pretty much every soul item possible, not dying to vanguard and getting the soul items in that area, cheesing Doran, you can get ~60,000 souls just after phalanx, which is a stupidly high amount for that point of the game. Without the deluxe stuff it's about half that at best.
